Kevin Sussman has a lot to thank TBBT for. Making his name on TV, Sussman starred as Stuart, an awkward comic book store owner, who went from occasional guest star to eventual series regular.

However, Sussman admits there was one storyline for his character he wishes the show had explored more before its end.

Stuart's backstory on the show

Introduced to the series in season 2, Stuart was at first a simple acquaintance of the main group (Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard). As the owner of the local comic store, it became a location the characters would more regularly visit, as well as one of the primary sets of the show.

Initially portrayed as a semi-successful retailer and artist, Stuart originally was a rival of Leonard's for Penny's affection. However, as Penny and Leonard's relationship eventually progressed, Stuart's character evolved to seem much more awkward. Often burdened with health issues, financial troubles, as well as difficulty in finding a girlfriend for himself. Especially after many of the others (once awkward bachelors themselves) began to settle down in the series.

The storyline Sussman wished TBBT had continued

Considering how poorly things had turned out for Stuart over the show's run, Sussman was eager to see his character's luck change for once. During season 11, the show introduced the character of Denise (Lauren Lapkus), who gets employed at Stuart's store. The two characters quickly developed feelings for each other, and by the second episode of season 12, the pair were in a formal relationship.

Speaking at a convention in 2021, Sussman stated he was hopeful when Denise was first introduced, it would lead to further developments for Stuart and a storyline between the two characters.

Unfortunately, the show would go on to unexpectedly end after that following season. Meaning they never got the time to play out much of the relationship growth that the other couples received over the series.

Of course, Sussman holds no resentment towards the writers or the show for his character's missed opportunity; in fact, quite the opposite. He also stated he thinks the only reason Stuart's story never got to continue further was due to the unexpected ending of the show.

Friends Ruined Sitcoms Without Trying, Big Bang Theory Producer Says

It wasn't until they got to the final season that the writers knew the series would be finishing for good. So he believes, although they likely intended to do more with Stuart and Denise, there ultimately was never the chance.

Further praising the show, Sussman is adamant about how positive it was to work on the set. Describing everyone as supportive, fun, and friendly, he justifies the series' longevity to how well the cast and crew all got along.

For him, it was an amazing experience being part of something like TBBT. And whether he wanted a more developed storyline for his character or not, it's something he ultimately wouldn't change a thing about.
