The Remarried Empress ending explained: the divorce was never supposed to be final
Emperor Sovieshu ends his marriage to Navier with a plan to undo it, and the plan falls apart in the room where he announces the divorce.
The Remarried Empress premieres on Disney+ on November 4, with four episodes at launch and two more each week until the 10-episode finale on November 25. Cho Su-won directs, from scripts by Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choong-yeol. Shin Min-a plays Navier, Empress of the Eastern Empire; Ju Ji-hoon plays her husband, Emperor Sovieshu; Lee Se-young plays Rashta, the runaway slave who becomes his mistress; and Lee Jong-suk plays Heinrey, a prince of the Western Kingdom who can secretly turn into a bird.
The series adapts Alphatart's web novel, serialized on Naver from 2018 to 2020, and its webtoon version, drawn by Sumpul. The show's finale hasn't aired yet. Here's how the novel ends.
Why Sovieshu wants a divorce
Navier and Sovieshu have known each other since childhood, and in their marriage Navier hasn't been able to conceive. Sovieshu needs an heir. He brings Rashta into the palace as a concubine, and when she becomes pregnant, he decides the child has to be born to an empress.
That means removing the one he has. When he files for divorce, he tells Navier it will only be temporary. The plan, as the story lays it out, runs in three steps:
- Divorce Navier and make Rashta empress, so her child is a legitimate heir.
- Divorce Rashta about a year after the heir is born.
- Remarry Navier.
Disney+'s character poster for Sovieshu sums up step one in five words: "I must divorce the empress."
The day the plan breaks
Navier doesn't fight the divorce. She has spent the months before it growing close to Heinrey, and before the hearing she had already proposed a marriage of convenience to him: an equal partnership, with no interference in each other's lives.

At the proceedings, she agrees to the divorce without protest and asks for one thing in return, permission to remarry immediately. Her poster line is the request itself: "I request an approval of my remarriage." Asked who she intends to marry, Heinrey steps forward. He has been in the room the whole time.
Sovieshu's plan depended on Navier still being available in a year. She was married again before the hearing ended.
The marriage of convenience doesn't stay one. Navier and Heinrey's partnership turns into a genuine love story, and the Western Kingdom, which Heinrey comes to rule, grows into an empire.

What happens to Rashta
Rashta gets exactly what Sovieshu's plan promised her, and it doesn't last. She becomes empress, and her hold on the title is shaky from the start. Then her past catches up with her:
- Her crimes are exposed, and she's arrested for treason.
- Her children turn out not to be Sovieshu's. Their father is Alan Rimwell.
- She's sentenced to life in prison and dies by suicide soon after.
The paternity reveal takes apart the only reason Sovieshu had for the divorce. The heir he restructured his marriage around was never his.
What happens to Sovieshu
He loses more than the plan. The story leaves strong signs that the infertility he blamed on Navier was his own. After Rashta's death, he tries to win Navier back and fails. She is already married, and soon pregnant by Heinrey.
Sovieshu stays emperor of the East, and he still needs a successor. He names one: Navier's daughter with Heinrey, Lari.
