Although season 2 hasn't even been released yet, the next chapter of the underwhelming series is already in early development.

Summary:

  • The debut season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power caused a massive backlash from fans
  • However, the show has been renewed for a second season, which is expected later this year
  • Much to the surprise of fans, the third season is already in the early stages of development

When The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series was announced, it was supposed to be an epic project that had every chance of eclipsing the legendary Game of Thrones.

With an unprecedented budget of more than $1 billion, and set in a never-before-seen era of Middle-earth history, it felt like a godsend to fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's work.

Unfortunately, this couldn't have been further from the truth, because while the first season of the show, which premiered on September 1, 2022, was gorgeous from a technical standpoint, it left much to be desired in most other respects.

The Show Massively Disappointed Fans

Fans of the original didn't appreciate the fact that The Rings of Power treated the source material with little respect, changing many elements of the story and the personalities of major characters like Galadriel.

It also failed to deliver a compelling and well-written story filled with intriguing characters, paling in comparison to Game of Thrones' prequel, House of the Dragon, which, in a twist of bitter irony, aired alongside the Prime Video fantasy series.

Which 2022 fantasy series did you enjoy more?

In light of all this, the news of the show's renewal for a second season came as quite a surprise, as many fans expected it to be quietly canceled after such an enormous backlash.

Season 3 Already in Early Development

But a new update on the show has fans even more confused, because even though season 2 hasn't even been released yet, it seems that Amazon is already planning the future of The Rings of Power.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show's creators, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, have signed a three-year deal with the company and have already begun early development on the show's third season.

While it hasn't been officially greenlit yet, the duo is currently working on the season's storyline, which clearly indicates that Amazon isn't ready to give up on the show just yet and is quite confident in the success of the second season.

Fans, on the other hand, aren't so sure that it will be a massive improvement on its underwhelming predecessor, believing that the creators are getting ahead of themselves.

Either way, they will have to wait for the second season to see the light of day and set the record straight on the show's potential future.

No specific release date has been announced for The Rings of Power season 2, although it is expected to be out sometime later this year.
