Neil Gaiman’s hit comic book series has never hidden its DC’s roots, but Netflix’s TV adaptation has gone on to make a direct reference to another superhero story in the second season — here’s what The Sandman’s fans are speculating about right now.

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of the recent years, The Sandman will soon be back on the screens for the last time with its second season’s second part, and it seems like the show is finally acknowledging the original story’s roots.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s comic book of the same name, The Sandman delves more profoundly in the world of dreams and myths rather than the one of caped superheroes with astonishing abilities, yet the original comic book has been pretty clear about its direct connection to the DC universe.

This time around, fans got to notice a blink-and-you-miss, but still major reference that might have just marked the TV series’ official entrance in the world of DC characters.

‘The Sandman’ Fans Are Raving Over Season 2 Major Hippolyta Reference

Despite Netflix’s show still allowing itself some distance from Gaiman’s original comic book, The Sandman does make nods to the source material by including tiny references to the origins of Gaiman’s story.

In the second season’s first part, Morpheus revealed a little detail of Lyta Hall’s background story, revealing that her full name is actually Hippolyta Trevor-Hall.

DC’ fans are already quite familiar with this name since in the superhero universe Hippolyta is the daughter of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor in certain continuities. Eventually, she becomes another superhero called Fury and then joins the superhero team called Infinity.

The Sandman’s fans quickly took to the social media to talk about the major reference, with Angel-M007 posting a meme about the matter in a Reddit thread and suggesting that the brief moment was “the biggest Easter Egg we’ve gotten that connects Sandman to the DCU”.

“I might be tripping but I would swear that during Season 1 she spoke with the exact same accent that Gal Gadot used while playing Wonder Woman. Maybe it's a native accent for both women but to me it sounded so similar that it felt deliberate”, A_Serious_House reflected.

“In the original Sandman comic, which took place in the DC Universe, Lyta WAS the same character as Wonder Woman's daughter, and she was the superheroine Fury. In the Netflix series, which does not take place in the DC universe, Lyta is just a normal woman who got dragged into the weirdness”, Dina-M retorted.

The user then added that, unlike Netflix’s TV adaptation, the original comic book made the connection to the DC universe very clear, which is why at least in the original source material Lyta is in fact the daughter of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor from Earth-2.

Will There Be ‘The Sandman’ Season 3?

As of now, Netflix has officially announced that the second season will be the last for The Sandman.

Many fans have long associated it with rumours about behind-the-scenes issues and all the controversies that are currently surrounding Neil Gaiman’s name.

Even though some fans still fear that the original comic’s several storyline arcs will be left behind, others keep hope that this time Netflix will take the matter seriously.

In the meantime, the second season’s part 2 is currently scheduled for a release on July 24.
