Carr is watching the story chronologically, prequel first. That works for someone who already knows how season 1 ends. For a first-time viewer, it changes how the ending of season 1 lands.

The Terminal List premiered on Prime Video on July 1, 2022, with Chris Pratt as Navy SEAL James Reece hunting the people responsible for wiping out his platoon and his family. Its prequel, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, followed in 2025, seven episodes released from August 27 to September 24, with Taylor Kitsch as Reece's best friend, Ben Edwards. Season 2 of the main series, adapted from Carr's second novel, True Believer, drops all eight episodes on October 21, 2026. That leaves roughly two weeks to decide how to catch up.

What Jack Carr said

Carr wrote the novels the shows are based on, co-created Dark Wolf with showrunner David DiGilio and executive produces the franchise. Ahead of season 2, he posted that he planned to rewatch Dark Wolf first and then The Terminal List.

His stated reason: "to experience the story chronologically," starting in 2015 and moving forward from there.

He has also been urging fans on social media to watch Dark Wolf before season 2 specifically, because it introduces characters and situations the new season picks up.

Why the order matters

Spoilers for The Terminal List season 1 follow.

Season 1 ends with its biggest reveal. Reece discovers that Ben, his closest friend and the man helping him pick off the conspirators, was part of the conspiracy all along. Ben took $20 million, never spent any of it, and argues that the platoon was already dying from the brain tumors caused by an experimental drug, so he let them go out in combat. Reece confronts him on his sailboat and shoots him.

Season 1 deliberately keeps Ben's past thin, and Screen Rant has pointed out that showing more of his history would have risked giving that twist away. Dark Wolf fills in all of it. Here's what it covers:

  • 2015, Mosul — Ben, leading a SEAL platoon alongside Reece's, executes an ISIS commander the CIA was protecting after finding the man's captive, a young girl. He and his officer, Raife Hastings (Tom Hopper), are stripped of rank and discharged.
  • The recruitment — CIA spymaster Jed Haverford (Robert Wisdom) offers them a way back, as part of a covert team running operations across Europe against an Iranian nuclear supply chain.
  • The betrayal — Haverford turns out to be protecting his own Iranian asset and sets up Ben's team to be killed. Ben survives, with Reece and members of his platoon riding to the rescue, and brings Haverford down.
  • The ending — Ben buys a boat, then accepts an offer to join the CIA's Ground Branch and passes its vetting.

Every one of those beats is fine on its own. Together, they turn Ben into the protagonist of a seven-episode series about a good soldier slowly being bent, and they end with him living on a boat inside the CIA. Season 1 needs you to see him as Reece's loyal friend until its final hour. A viewer coming from Dark Wolf will walk into season 1 already watching him closely. The prequel also opens with a scene that ties back to season 1, and much of its marketing, including the first-look coverage Carr shared on his own site, names the betrayal outright.

For a newcomer, chronological order spends season 1's best card before season 1 gets to play it.

Which order to pick

If you haven't seen either show, start with The Terminal List season 1, then Dark Wolf, then season 2. That is the order the shows were made in and the only order that preserves the season 1 reveal. Dark Wolf was built for that audience anyway. As one reviewer noted, viewers who know the season 1 ending have a hard time forgetting it while watching Ben as the hero, and that tension is a big part of what makes the prequel work.

If you've already seen season 1, follow Carr. Dark Wolf first, then season 1, gives you the full arc of Ben Edwards before season 2 starts dealing with the people he left behind. That matters, because season 2 brings in Dark Wolf characters, including Raife Hastings, Iraqi special forces officer Mo Farooq (Dar Salim) and CIA contractor Jules Landry (Luke Hemsworth).

Season 2 drops on October 21. Fifteen episodes of Terminal List fit comfortably into the two weeks before it, in either order.
