The long-awaited House of the Dragon season finale aired on Sunday, October 23, ending up being the most buzz-generating episode of the show after having been leaked online 24 hours before the official premiere.

The creators of the show gave the viewers a big piece of drama to discuss, and it's surely a good thing – because something has to fuel us in the long-long wait for season two. As of now, it hasn't even started filming yet. Even more, it hasn't even been written.

Executive producer Sara Hess admitted in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the team is writing season two right now. They are working hard trying to figure out the real nature of Daemon and Rhaenyra's Targaryen relationship as George R.R. Martin's book Fire&Blood offers too many interpretations. One thing is for sure: the second season of House of Dragon will not be out till 2024.

A Subtle Cersei Callback on House of the Dragon You Might Have Missed

So there is at least one thing we know for sure: season two will focus even more on Daemon and Rhaenyra, but we will not see them anytime soon. Filming is supposed to start in Spain in the early Spring of 2023. It usually takes six months to film a season and at least the same amount of time for the work of the CGI studios. The best case scenario we will have season two by early 2024, and even that estimate is optimistic.

The main reason for the long wait would be the late confirmation of season two by HBO. The executives didn't dare to order another season before premiering the first one. Only when the ratings for the first episode skyrocketed to the largest audience for any new original series in HBO history was it clear that one season would not be enough.

Expect Even More Daemyra in House of the Dragon Season 2

We don't even have to look for the official news as Reddit already knows it all. As Reddit users point out, the tendency for the long wait between the seasons is growing. Shows are getting bigger, writing is taking longer, and the post-production with all the CGI effects takes forever. So most of the big shows like Mandalorian or the Witcher require the same 2 years gap between the seasons. The only hope for the House of the Dragon fans is that CGI models for the dragons are already built. But the more dragon fights we are supposed to see in the coming season, the longer we will be waiting. At least we can comfort ourselves with the expectations that the wait will be rewarded properly.
