Fans say the exit of the long-running ABC medical drama's lead character felt like a "giant slap in the face." Now, both fans and haters agree the show should end.

After whopping 19 seasons, Ellen Pompeo is ready to say goodbye to the show that made her one of the world's highest-paid actors.

This revelation came as a shock to many fans and even those who have never seen Grey's Anatomy or loathe the show.

Like it or not, the medical drama has become a global cultural phenomenon, and the fact that the show named Grey's Anatomy will go on without its title character Meredith Grey seems as weird as if House was to continue without Dr. Gregory House.

Grey's Anatomy: We Suspended Disbelief, But This Moment Was Too Much

In fact, the creator of the show Shonda Rhimes once told E! News that Grey's Anatomy would end with Ellen Pompeo's exit.

"If she wants to stop, we're stopping," the showrunner said.

Now, however, Rhimes went back on her word and allowed the show to go on without the lead character, a decision that frustrated many fans.

"I've been watching the show since I was a teenager and always said I'd watch it until the very end, but that was on the basis of Meredith still being part of the show," one of the fans wrote on Reddit.

Without Meredith Grey, the show just seems not interesting enough to continue watching. Besides, fans were disappointed by the way the creators wrote Meredith off.

"I want her to have her happy ending," a fan wrote. "She treated Nick like SHIT, not even considering him in her move and I don't blame Nick for being upset with her."

Meredith suddenly breaking up with her partner was not the only thing that annoyed fans. Meredith's final episode added to all the drama she's been overcoming for 19 seasons, and the house she shared with her late husband, Derek Shepherd, burned down because lightning struck it.

"She's lost so much, and now she loses something else and with it, all her memories, and her kids lose their memories. That feels like a giant slap in the face," the fan added.

The lead character, which appeared in the majority of the show's 400 episodes, deserves a better conclusion to her storyline. And the show should not continue without its main attraction, both fans and haters agree.
