This 90%-Rated Drama Is the Most Heartbreaking Miniseries on Paramount+
Even though you will end up sobbing, it’s a must watch.
Do you believe in true love? I know for a lot of people out there it's just a concept that sells, but for some of us it's still something we're so eager to find in life. Although there's no precise definition for the term, there are shows and movies that give a perfect look at it from the inside.
It's true that some love stories are sad and heartbreaking, not every romance ends in marriage, and there's no guarantee that a perfect start to a relationship will lead to happily ever after. But what’s absolutely amazing about love is that we still try and give it a chance once we feel it, even though it makes our heart ache.
The story that falls precisely into this description is the one in the center of Showtime ’s 2023 miniseries called Fellow Travelers. Ron Nyswaner did an amazing job giving us a story of unconditional love that follows two men for decades.
What Is Fellow Travelers About?
Fellow Travelers follows Hawkins Fuller and Timothy Laughlin, brilliantly played by Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey, two men who met each other during the worst of times in the U.S., during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s. Hawk is a charismatic World War II veteran who now works at the State Department and has a chance for a brilliant future.
One day, however, he meets Tim, a man who is his complete opposite. Tim is an idealist who has his beliefs and is a rather sensitive person who is not afraid of love and feelings, while Hawk depends on his lack of attachment. However, these two embark on a risky love affair where every minute they are together they are in danger of being caught.
The story follows them through four decades, giving us a glimpse into their lives at different times: we see Hawk get married and Tim go to seminary, Hawk lose his child and Tim become a social worker. No matter what happens in their lives, they still find a way to be together. But only for a short time.
Despite the fact that they are both gay, Tim is comfortable with his personality, but Hawk remains in the closet almost until the end of his life.
The show begins in the present, when Hawk finds out that Tim's life is in danger because he has AIDS. And even though he can't stay away and goes to see Tim, he still can't find it in his heart to say he loves him. And yet they both know that this is the true love that everyone's talking about.
The show has 8 hour-long episodes, but there’s no way you wouldn’t finish them all in one sitting. And during the binge you will feel it all: hatred changed to love towards Hawk, affection and sympathy towards Tim, and overall sorrow for two people who wasted their lives on false values.
Fellow Travelers is available to stream on Paramount+.
