This Mark Wahlberg Flop Is the Only Horror I Ever Watched: Don’t Waste Your Time on It

I was once dragged into the theatre where nothing good was on at the time, so we chose the only thing with a popular name in it. After that I said I’ll never watch horror again.
I can’t say for sure why I hate horrors, but I just think forcing yourself into a situation when you will feel scared or uncomfortable is just a little too harsh on mental health. Although many people consider the genre being a perfect tool to pump adrenaline, it just doesn’t work for me.
That’s why I take a break from the cinema when there are only horror movies on. But once in 2008 I was out with my siblings in a small city where there’s nothing to do, so we decided to go check out the movies. And there it was, the poster for The Happening.
The movie is a horror-thriller by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg’s face looked familiar, so I thought well maybe it’s going to be okay, and if I get really scared there’s always an option to close your eyes, right?
Fortunately for me, the movie wasn’t scary at all, I only had to close my eyes twice, when a granny was banging her head against the wall until she died, and when a woman turned on the mower and laid down under it. But the rest of it was a disaster.
What Is ‘The Happening’ About?
The film follows a natural disaster in the form of an airborne neurotoxin emitted by plants, which causes mass suicides across the Northeastern United States. Mark Wahlberg plays Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher who, along with his wife Alma and others, tries to survive the inexplicable events.
So basically the movie is about how people start killing themselves every time the wind blows. Nobody understands why it’s happening, nobody sees the way out, and then one day, when they were not expecting it and were ready to die, the wind stops and everybody is safe again.
The end.
What Do Fans and Critics Think About ‘The Happening’?
- On IMDb, The Happening has 5/10.
- On Rotten Tomatoes, The Happening has 17% from critics and 24% from viewers.
“The Happening was the worst movie I had ever seen. The acting was shockingly bad, and the dialogue, it wasn't what made me truly think the movie was dumb. It was the over-acceleration of the suicides, which took away any fear of the situation. And the actual ending of the movie was super dumb too. It just stopped. They were running from the wind. And then the trees decided, OK, we're done... for now,” redditor aphrahannah said.
Where to Stream ‘The Happening’?
If you are ready to give The Happening a chance, you can stream it on Netflix and on Prime Video.
