Bullet Train was a breath of fresh air in the action comedy genre, similar to the works of Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino.

Summary:

  • Brad Pitt's acting career has had a rather bumpy ride in recent years, leading fans to believe that he has passed his prime
  • Surprisingly, 2022's Bullet Train came out of nowhere, proving that the actor hasn't lost his talent
  • As an absolutely great action comedy, the movie deserves to be among the best in the genre and become a modern classic

Brad Pitt's career has been somewhat shaky in recent years, with many fans believing that the actor is now well past his prime, as he doesn't appear on the big screen as much as he used to.

The few projects he has appeared in in recent years have been pretty hit and miss, as while 2019's Ad Astra, for example, received rather warm reviews, the reception for 2022's Babylon was much more mixed, although both films underperformed at the box office.

Against this backdrop, the success of the relatively small 2022's Bullet Train comes as quite a surprise, albeit a welcome one, as the film absolutely deserves to become a modern classic of action comedies.

Bullet Train Is A Great Addition To Brad Pitt's Acting Career

Directed by David Leitch, best known for his work on Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw, the movie is based on Kōtarō Isaka's novel Maria Beetle (titled Bullet Train for the Western editions) and revolves around a group of professional assassins on a Japanese bullet train.

An assassin code-named Ladybug, portrayed by Pitt, must replace his colleague, who suddenly falls ill just before the mission, and retrieve a mysterious briefcase from the train.

The trick is that Ladybug is suffering from a never-ending streak of bad luck, so the seemingly simple mission quickly goes sideways when he tries to get off the train and learns that he is not the only professional assassin on board.

From this point on, the plot becomes increasingly convoluted, with a wide array of colorful and memorable characters entering the picture in an attempt to prevent the unlucky killer from leaving the train alive.

Bullet Train Brought Hope to a Rather Stagnant Genre

While the film received mixed reviews from critics, audiences were much more positive, leading to Bullet Train quickly gaining a significant number of fans.

With a nice story, charismatic and well-acted characters portrayed by a star-studded cast that includes, in addition to Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon, Brian Tyree Henry and many others, the movie managed to resonate with many viewers.

The mixture of great action, dialogue and humor brings back memories of the works of Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, although, in order not to raise expectations too high, it must be pointed out that it is still a bit inferior to the greatest works of these legendary directors.

The story has its fair share of heartfelt moments as well, along with some nice and unexpected twists that take the plot in new directions.

Of course, it is not completely without flaws, and some fans feel that something prevents the movie from becoming a true masterpiece in their eyes.

Still, Bullet Train is a great addition to the action-comedy genre, many installments of which seem more or less the same and formulaic nowadays, so if you are looking for something to watch for the evening, you can give it a chance and might end up absolutely loving it.

The movie is currently available on Netflix, along with other platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV.
