And it's better than you think.

Sci-fi has always been that kind of genre that mesmerized us, but you have to have a decent budget to pull everything that we've all fallen in love with. Or do you?

Let's figure this one out.

Hollywood pours millions into sci-fi productions. Think about it, your favorite science fiction probably cost around $60 million to make. But what if I told you that one of the most intricate and thought-provoking sci-fi films ever made cost less than a used car?

We introduce to you Primer (2004), a film created with just $7,000. Yep, you got that right. And this micro-budget turned into something that deserves your attention.

The film's creator, Shane Carruth, didn't just direct the movie, he was involved in the entire process. Writer, director, producer, cinematographer, editor, music composer, and lead actor? Easy! Carruth proved that one person's vision, combined with that kind of determination, could challenge Hollywood's expensive status quo.

Primer (2004): When Engineering Meets Time Travel

So what's the movie about?

Primer follows two engineers, Aaron (Shane Carruth) and Abe (David Sullivan), who happen to stumble upon something unusual while messing around with bug-checking devices in their garage. This discovery evolves into what they believe to be a time machine. But this isn't your typical Back to the Future scenario, there's no DeLorean, no flashy effects, just pure scientific intrigue.

Unlike typical sci-fi films that spoon-feed explanations, Primer treats its audience with respect. There are no oversimplified explanations. Instead, viewers are invited to piece together the puzzle alongside the characters.

Primer Creators Managed to Do Movie Magic on a Budget

As you can imagine, the film's budget forced creativity at every turn. Carruth shot the movie in suburban Dallas, Texas, turning ordinary locations into backdrops for Primer.

The cast consisted primarily of his friends and family, with David Sullivan, in his first-ever acting role.

"Primer was made for $7 thousand. That was just five of us running around with the camera in Dallas, Texas. I’m really fortunate as an actor because that was my first role and we got this opportunity to tell this tale of time travel,” Sullivan recalls the experience fondly in an interview with Forbes.

And despite the film's success, Carruth acknowledges there were compromises. When asked about the challenges of playing so many roles at once, Carruth admits it wasn't all by choice, and the lack of money definitely played into it. Speaking with IndieWire, he revealed that the biggest mistake he made “was not having a full-time producer.”

In the same interview, he was asked what he would do if he had more money, to which he replied:

"I would’ve shot on 35mm. I would have shot more film. It would’ve been nice to write the music and then hand it off to someone accomplished."

Yet we think that these limitations may have been exactly what gave Primer its unique, authentic feel.

If you're intrigued by this sci-fi drama, you can catch Primer on Apple TV+. And, trust us, you won't be disappointed.
