This ‘Starfighter’ News Has ‘Star Wars’ Fans Hyped Up: Who Will Matt Smith Play?

Doctor Who’s actor joins Ryan Gosling in a new Star Wars movie, and fans can’t think of a better fit for a villainous role.
Star Wars’ upcoming movie titled Starfighter keeps assembling its leading cast, and it seems like the name isn’t just about fighting stars, but also featuring a star-studded ensemble.
The cult sci-fi franchise’s fans haven’t yet fully recovered after the news of Ryan Gosling joining the Star Wars universe as a yet unknown character, potentially introducing a new long-standing story with a completely different set of characters this time.
It didn’t take much time for the franchise to drop the news about another exciting contender who, as fans think, will also be joining a “villainous” Star Wars trend.
Matt Smith Gets on Board for ’Starfighter’ in a Villainous Role
It seems like fighting for the Iron Throne won’t be the last battle Matt Smith will have quite soon as, according to Deadline, House of the Dragon’s actor has landed one of the major roles in Star Wars’ upcoming space-themed movie.
It’s not clear yet who exactly Smith will be portraying in Starfighter, but sources suggest he would be putting on a villainous mask, with the role becoming a major new entrance in the Star Wars universe.
The production is now scheduled to start this fall, with the movie coming to theatres on May 28, 2027.
Matt Smith Will Continue British Villain Trend in ‘Star Wars’ Franchise
While it wasn’t always intentional, Star Wars fans quickly took notice of George Lucas’ preference of British actors for the roles of the biggest villains like Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin and Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor Palpatine, which now looks like a meme revived by Matt Smith’s casting news.
“An evil British guy? In Star Wars?” Redditor Earthpig_Johnson noted ironically in a thread.
“I don't think there is a working actor that has a face more fit to be a Star Wars villain than Matt Smith. He just looks like he belongs in an imperial officer uniform”, mikeyfreshh added.
“Not gonna like the idea of a Star Wars movie that has Ryan Gosling and my favorite Doctor going up against each other has me so hyped just from a pure fanboy perspective”, Snoo_83425 commented.
“I had zero interest in the new Star Wars movie until I learned that Matt Smith will be the villain. Now I have one interest”, EJintheCloud wrote.
