Tim Burton Unpacks His Methods of Making Kid-Friendly Horrors: “I Never Think Too Much About It”

Wednesday and Beetlejuice’s director accepts life in all its scariest forms — and so should children, he thinks.
Having kicked his career off with Beetlejuice back in 1988, Tim Burton has made his name sound synonymous with a dark-coloured, but still flamboyant directorial style, continuing with extremely successful horror-ish features like Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland.
Right now Burton is going even further with Netflix’s Wednesday, the first season of which was highly praised for its visuals and the omnipresent homage to the original Addams Family story.
The director’s stories, however, are often regarded as just a bit too much for kids that these stories are usually created for, but Burton thinks his movies might be the right thing to learn about life from.
Tim Burton Says His Movies “Remain With People” Because “They Incorporate Light and Dark”
Just like life can’t be all about sunshine and rainbows, Tim Burton thinks his movies can’t give only positive or only negative vibes, coming as some sort of mixture of feelings and emotions that an ordinary person has to experience in life at some point.
“People say it's too light or too dark. Kids will like it, or The Nightmare Before Christmas is too scary for little children. They're like fables or fairy tales, you know? Those kinds of things, they remain with people because they incorporate light and dark and humour and drama and scariness”, Burton revealed during one of press conferences ahead of Wednesday’s season 2 release on Netflix next week (shared by Asia One).
He also suggested that such horror-ish fairy tales are what he’s capable of doing naturally, without giving much thought to what it will seem to the audiences.
“And so for me, I never think too much about it, because that's what life is, it's a mixture of all those things together”, the director added.
‘Wednesday’ Cast Teases a Memorable Family Camping Scene in Season 2
Even though Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday is coming back to Nevermore Academy to fight another bunch of all kinds of monsters, it seems like she will still have some quality time with her quirky family.
As Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, who portray Morticia and Gomez Addams respectively, teased at the same press conference, Wednesday’s upcoming second season will feature a camping episode that somehow will make all of the show’s fans follow suit.
“When people see that camping episode, everyone and their mother is gonna want an Addams tent”, Guzmán revealed.
As for Zeta-Jones, she added that she wouldn’t do the same thing in real life with her husband and kids, but still enjoyed fake camping on the show’s set.
“As Morticia Addams, I will go camping every day of the week”, the actress said.
Wednesday’s season 2 will arrive on Netflix in two parts, with volumes 1 and 2 being released on August 6 and September 3 respectively.
