Tom Cruise Seeing Red as Oppenheimer Gets an Extra Week of Exclusive IMAX Run
What’s great news for all the moviegoers who are still desperate to book their late tickets to Nolan’s magnum opus is a disaster for the biggest action star of our time.
Christopher Nolan’s 3-hour-long biopic about the father of the atomic bomb has been enjoying tremendous popularity all over the world. As of now, the movie has already grossed over $405,5M worldwide at the box office, and it’s after just two weekends. Such a result is phenomenal for a movie of this genre and age rating.
However, there are still many people both in the US and outside of it who haven’t watched the movie and are struggling to find tickets. In New York, for example, the tickets are sold out until August 16; the same goes for many other places. Fans that want to watch the movie are physically unable to book any dates there.
Seeing this, IMAX decided to extend Oppenheimer’s run for one more week: there’s still plenty of money to make there, and the audience would be grateful. This is a wise decision considering just how popular the movie turned out to be, and it’s sure to benefit IMAX theaters handsomely.
But do you know who it will hurt massively? Tom Cruise!
The greatest action actor of our time has not been happy lately. His latest ages-in-production Mission: Impossible movie, Dead Reckoning Part I, came out merely a week before Oppenheimer, and since IMAX and Christopher Nolan are very much in love with each other, Cruise’s movie was kicked from there in favor of Oppenheimer.
The IMAX execs refused to allow M:I7 even a portion of their screen time back then — but they promised they’d be happy to welcome him back to IMAX screens once Oppenheimer was done. This was a huge blow for Cruise and cost him a lot of money: Dead Reckoning Part I has been severely underperforming since its release.
The promise of IMAX screens after Oppenheimer’s run did little to ease the pain, but it was at least something — and now, the IMAX execs decided to extend Nolan’s exclusive run for an extra week. You bet Tom Cruise is pissed off beyond any limits, and honestly, it’s hard to blame the man, considering the circumstances.
