Get ready for the journey of a lifetime: Tom Cruise and his go-to star director are recreating Clint Eastwood’s iconic adventure.

Tom Cruise never sleeps, never rests, and never relaxes. The man is a certified workaholic, and we’re not sure how he can keep going at such a rapid pace for so many years, but he does. Recently, the action star signed a strategic partnership with Warner Bros., but it was shrouded in mystery; now, the first movie that will come out of this collaboration is finally revealed, and it’s a golden classic.

The Gauntlet Became Critics’ Sweetheart

1977’s The Gauntlet starring Clint Eastwood follows an alcoholic detective tasked with escorting a prostitute from Las Vegas to Phoenix as she’s a key witness for a massive mob trial. What looks like a simple job soon turns into a nightmare: as it turns out, there are countless people who don’t want the woman to testify, and not just the mafia. The rich and corrupt take bets the couple won’t make it to Phoenix.

As per usual, critics and viewers rarely think alike — and in the case of The Gauntlet, the former enjoyed the movie more. On Rotten Tomatoes, Clint Eastwood’s classic flick boasts an 86% Top Critic Score but a far less impressive 54% Audience Score, and IMDb is stuck somewhere in-between with a solid but not stellar 6.4/10 score.

According to Giant Freakin Robot’s recent report, The Gauntlet is one of the movies that fall under Tom Cruise and Warner Bros’s strategic partnership deal. The actor will take over the alcoholic detective’s part after Clint Eastwood to once again see whether it’s possible to survive a trip from Las Vegas to Phoenix with the mafia and the authorities hot on his tail.

The new The Gauntlet will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Tom Cruise’s favorite director who has been responsible for some of the actor’s biggest action movies in the past years, including Mission: Impossible, Jack Reacher, and more. No principal photography start or release date has been announced so far.
