Tom Ellis to Star in a New CIA Show on CBS: Here’s What We Know

This FBI spinoff has finally gotten a new title and a leading star, which means we should be hearing about it soon. Until then, let's find out what's in store for us!
CBS has just announced that the new installment in the FBI universe is finally happening, and the main character of the new series will be played by none other than Tom Ellis. The new series of the franchise will be focusing on CIA agents, thus the title – CIA. It is set to air during the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
The show’s development was first reported in January of this year, but the plan at the time was to start as a backdoor pilot and introduce the characters in an episode of this season's FBI.
Tom Ellis will play the first of the two main characters in the new show, as it has already been established that it will focus on a couple. As the genre suggests, they are unlikely partners. Ellis will play the "fast-talking, rule-breaking, loose cannon CIA case officer," and his partner will be the law-abiding, book-smart FBI agent thrown in for balance.
CIA will be an hour-long crime drama that dives deep into the big picture — through case solving and legal action, and of course it will spend a lot of time exploring the nature of the unlikely bond that forms between two people who at first seem like each other's nightmares. Casting is currently underway for the remaining roles.
The series was created by Dick Wolf and David Hudgins. The duo serves as executive producers along with Nicole Perlman, David Chasteen and Peter Jankowski, with Hudgins serving as showrunner. Like the rest of the FBI series, CIA is produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment and CBS Studios.
What Do the Fans Think of Tom Ellis in CIA?
“YAAAAAAY!!! He always wanted to play James Bond, so maybe this will help! “Loose canon, CIA agent is paired with b- the-book agent…” Plot sounds familiar, (minus all the supernatural stuff), I will definitely watch it!” Redditor Reithel1 said.
Many fans were excited to hear that their beloved star was joining a new show. However, part of the excitement came from the fact that they had already seen Ellis in some sort of cahoots with a detective before – in Lucifer.
“Lucifer got bored with the LAPD and went where the fun really is,” Redditor Romado joked.
