Top 3 Queer Love Stories on Screen That Revived My Faith in Romance

It's not hard to become my favorite love story, but these guys just took it to the next level.
What do we love about television and movies? It shows us stories that inspire us, make us believe, entertain us, and sometimes break us. Whether it's an action-packed thriller or a slow-burn romantic drama, the stories told to us on any size screen have power over us, and there's no denying that.
For me personally though it was love stories that made it all so much more compelling. And while there are loads of shows and films that have the most romantic or heartbreakingly sweet stories ever, these three queer tales managed to go straight under my skin.
1. Fellow Travelers ( 2023)
Fellow Travelers, based on the novel by Thomas Mallon, is the latest miniseries I watched on the topic, but I can say for sure it’s my favorite now. The miniseries is a sort of historical drama that explores the forbidden romance between two men, Tim Laughlin and Hawk Fuller.
It's set against the backdrop of the McCarthy era in the 1950s, and that's what makes it so much more dramatic. As their secret but rather passionate relationship develops, they must navigate the dangers of being queer during a time when homosexuality was illegal and could lead to dangerous consequences.
The story spans several decades and shows how Tim and Hawk, despite not being able to be together permanently, managed to stay in each other's lives no matter what. Yes, sometimes they were toxic to each other, sometimes they hated each other, but they were never ready to let go of their love. Until the very end.
2. Heartstopper ( 2022-2024)
Unlike the previous series, this one is set in modern times and mixes coming-of-age drama with coming-out drama. What I like the most about the show is how it doesn't shy away from depicting all the difficulties teenagers have to go through before discovering their true selves.
Heartstopper explores it all: mental health issues, relationships with classmates and relatives, eating disorders, all the pressures teenagers face during the most sensitive time of their lives.
The story follows the blossoming romance between two teenage boys, Charlie and Nick. Charlie is this shy guy who doesn't like attention and is bullied because of his sexuality, and Nick is a popular and seemingly straight rugby player. At first Charlie was sure he had no chance with a guy like Nick, but he soon realized they had so much more in common. And their unlikely friendship turns into a beautiful first love story.
3. Schitt's Creek (Patrick and David’s story) (2015-2020)
While Schitt's Creek isn't entirely a queer show, it's impossible to ignore probably the most heartfelt storyline of all in the series. Patrick and David's relationship is an outstanding portrayal of love for many reasons.
When I first saw David, there was no way I could ever imagine feeling sorry for him or rooting for him. The guy is an obnoxious and self-absorbed jerk who appreciates nothing (except for maybe expensive beauty products). But after spending some time with him, I started to understand where he's coming from, and I began to like him. However, it's not until he meets Patrick that we realize his true potential as a good person.
Their relationship is so special because it develops with natural ease and humor, without unnecessary drama or trauma. Patrick is patient, kind and supportive as David learns to finally open his heart. And that kind of support is what every couple should have.
