Returning director Joseph Kosinski says the future Tom Cruise sequel will be “ambitious” and has “a big idea”, but it seems that fans want something completely different.

Top Gun fans get their most promising update yet about the highly anticipated third installment. Following the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, which soared to over $1.4 billion worldwide and earned multiple Oscar nominations, the franchise is officially moving forward with another mission.

Director Joseph Kosinski and screenwriter Ehren Kruger are back in the cockpit, developing what promises to be an ambitious continuation of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's story.

“Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak. It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along,” Kosinski told Screen Rant in a new interview.

Explaining why he decided to return to the franchise even after the seemingly perfect closure of Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski said it was about “a new challenge” of coming up with the idea ambitious enough to “open up the story in a way you just can’t let go.”

However, it seems that the Top Gun fandom begs to differ. In fact, letting go is exactly what many fans demand online.

‘Top Gun’ Could Use a Prequel, Not Another Tom Cruise-Led Sequel

In Top Gun, Mitchell’s father Duke was a US naval aviator who died in the Vietnam war. He is only referenced several times, but is said to have flown dangerously — something he and Maverick have in common.

Fans believe that the story of Duke Mitchell would be much more interesting to see than yet another sequel with Tom Cruise — because let’s be honest, we have had much more sequels recently than we asked for.

“This has been my view since Maverick came out. Let the Tom cruise arc be done and do a prequel about his father. Maverick is so good and ends perfectly, there’s no need [to] revisit. There are still flying F4s around the world so they could in theory still shoot it practically too,” said Redditor Vivid-Reception-2813.

The only correct way to expand the franchise would be going sideways or backwards, not forward, fans say.

“I think that following Hangman or one of the others with some light inclusion by Mav as a teacher or something relating to the school could be interesting. Maybe a 'test' of Fighters vs Drones (like what most people assumed Maverick would be about early on) could be interesting,” suggested Redditor aaronupright.

Some would only agree to go to the cinemas if it’s a prequel — and they’re not too optimistic about the chances of that happening.

“I hope that they make the movie for fans, not for people who barely even care, the people who will just watch it once. But knowing Hollywood, they won’t care about the fans. The movie doesn’t need to happen if it’s not a prequel. I feel like anything other than a prequel will “soil” the franchise,” said Redditor ApprehensivePrint178.

Top Gun 3 was already confirmed, with the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote and co-produced Top Gun: Maverick, saying it was “already in the bag” in late May of this year.
