The story in Tim Burton’s tragic Gothic musical involves pretty young characters, and it somehow resulted in Corpse Bride getting a major fan theory years after its release.

Tim Burton has always been someone to look up to when it comes to young filmmakers seeking ways to bring another Gothic romantic story to the screens, getting inspiration from 2005’s Corpse Bride, one of Burton’s finest movies.

Making a revolution in the genre, Burton still sticks to the essential elements of a typical gothic novel, with that being a mysterious event involving supernatural forces and young or even teenage characters who are looking for answers to the biggest questions in their life.

In Corpse Bride, however, some fans saw a connection in Victor, Emily and Victoria’s age that pointed out another major plot detail and thus created a very popular fan theory.

How Old Are Main Characters in ‘Corpse Bride’?

Though the movie doesn’t reveal this information explicitly, it’s believed that both Victoria and Victor are about the same age, with the former being 19-20 years old and the latter 19 years old.

Emily, who is the corpse bride Victor accidentally vows to marry, most likely died when she was in her early 20s and, by the time the storyline unfolds, has been dead for 9 years.

Lord Barkis Bittern, in his turn, is supposed to be around 41 years old in the movie, later revealed to be Emily’s fiancé and murderer.

Despite Victoria being just as shocked as Victor when Emily shows up in their life, some fans have speculated over the years that Emily might in fact be Victoria’s maternal aunt who she had no idea about.

Apart from the physical resemblance that both characters have, Corpse Bride’s viewers suggested Emily is the younger sister of Victoria’s mother Maudeline who, trying to cover up the scandal about Emily’s elopement and eventual murder, never told her daughter about her aunt.

“It also explains how, in the film, the Everglots claim that Victoria is an "otter in disgrace" (a play on "utter disgrace"), because she looks like the "utter disgrace" Emily...who, of course, ran away with her family's jewels and fortune to elope with Lord Barkis, and "never returned”, Redditor Obversa pointed out in a thread.

This theory, however, keeps dividing the movie’s fans, some of whom see quite many contradictions — mostly in Emily’s decision to revenge her parents by stealing their jewellery.
