VisionQuest release date, cast and trailer: Paul Bettany's Vision is back — and so is a villain the Avengers watched die in 2015
Five years ago, a bone-white android learned the truth about himself, said something cryptic, and flew out a window — and Marvel just... left it there. On October 14, the bill for that cliffhanger finally comes due.
Quick catch-up for everyone who's forgotten the WandaVision finale (understandable, it's been five years and one multiverse). White Vision — rebooted, memory-restored, emotionally unfinished — simply departed. No address, no follow-up.
VisionQuest is the payoff: the closing chapter of the trilogy that ran WandaVision into Agatha All Along, premiering October 14, 2026 on Disney+, with Picard season 3's Terry Matalas running the show.
The premise is a haunted group chat
Vision is in hiding, dodging everyone who'd like to weaponize him, and consulting the AI personas buried in his programming: J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H. — and Ultron. As one does. He also picks up a traveling companion: a mysterious boy named Thomas Shepherd, a name that will detonate something in the brain of every WandaVision viewer who remembers Wanda's twins.
Which brings us to the villain problem. Ultron died in 2015. The Avengers watched it happen — Vision personally incinerated his last body at the end of Age of Ultron. And yet here's James Spader, purring in the trailer like no time has passed at all.
"I can't believe it took you so long to turn to me," Spader's Ultron says. "Everyone knows Ultron has long been fascinated by humanity."
Bettany, for his part, frames the whole series as one question: "What, or perhaps who, is he? And what makes us actually human? Which brings us to the person you most want beside you during an existential crisis: Ultron."
The cast is quietly stacked
- Paul Bettany — Vision, obviously, in his fourth decade of dying and un-dying for this franchise;
- James Spader — Ultron, back from the scrapyard;
- James D'Arcy — and if you clocked that he played the actual human Jarvis in Agent Carter, congratulations, you understand exactly how evil this casting is;
- Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Emily Hampshire, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan — rounding out a roster that looks more prestige-TV than punch-'em-up;
- Directors include Vincenzo Natali — yes, the Cube guy, directing a sad robot dad show.
A synthezoid with his dead maker's voice in his head, road-tripping with a boy who shouldn't exist. That's not a Marvel logline, that's a Sundance one.
