War release date and cast: Sienna Miller and Dominic West's HBO Max divorce drama got a season 2 order before it even premiered
HBO bought two seasons of a show about famous people's marriages detonating in public — and then cast it with two actors who know the genre from the inside.
War is now streaming: the eight-episode legal drama premiered October 1 on HBO and HBO Max, with Sky airing it a day later in the UK. Created by George Kay — the Lupin and Hijack writer who has never met a premise he couldn't turn into a vise — it stages the divorce from hell: tech entrepreneur Morgan Henderson (Dominic West) versus film-star wife Carla Duval (Sienna Miller), with rival London firms Cathcarts and Taylor & Byrne (James McArdle and Phoebe Fox) feeding the bonfire. Each side gets told the same line, which is the show's whole thesis:
"You are the wronged party here."
And here's the structural flex: this didn't need good ratings to continue. HBO and Sky ordered two seasons before a single episode aired, with season 2 already in production as an anthology reset — same warring law firms, new case, new combatants.

Season 2 is already stacked
The next installment trades the divorce for an explosive defamation case, and the incoming cast list is absurd:
- Marisa Tomei and Kelly Macdonald leading
- David Harewood and Richard Schiff — yes, The West Wing's Toby doing British litigation
- Linus Roache, Claire Skinner, and Omari Douglas rounding out the firm-side regulars
The casting is doing cartwheels the scripts can't
Critics are split on the show itself — IndieWire dismissed it as "dull and dumb" — but Slate's read is the one worth printing: the series is "completely serviceable" as a legal drama and becomes riveting only when you remember who's playing it. Miller spent 2005 as tabloid collateral when fiancé Jude Law's nanny affair broke, and got branded the party girl who couldn't keep a man — her career paid the bill for his behavior. West was photographed kissing Lily James in 2020 while married, staged a kiss with his wife for the cameras, and sailed on. The disparity is the subtext of every scene they share — and West, helpfully, once put his own worldview on the record back in 2016:
"I think women should be more indulgent of affairs. Everyone should turn a blind eye to men's behavior between the ages of 40 and 50."
A man who said that, playing a rich husband whose wife lawyers up, on a show called War. New episodes roll out weekly on HBO Max through November.
