Looks like the stakes are getting amped up in this spin-off, folks! Let's just say they're a whole lot higher than they were in Yellowstone's latest (yawn) season. Buckle up, because it's about to get intense.

In the latest episode of the highly anticipated prequel series, 1923, fans were left stunned as they watched the Dutton family face a shocking attack.

As the family made their way out of Billings, they were ambushed by Scottish sheep herder, Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) and his gang, resulting in serious gunshot wounds for many members of the family, including John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale), Jacob (Harrison Ford ), Cara (Helen Mirren), Jack (Darren Mann), and Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph).

But it was the death of John Dutton Sr. that really sent shockwaves through the Yellowstone fan community. With his death, creator Taylor Sheridan seems to be raising the stakes for the Dutton family in the 1923 spin-off, adding an intensity that some fans feel has been lacking in the main Yellowstone series.

The twist was indeed shocking, but not for everyone, apparently.

"Did Jacob Dutton really think that hanging five or six people from a tree limb would go without retribution? Really unbelievably fantastic episode, but did not understand the logic behind the mass hanging. I can't have been the only one who was expecting the party to be ambushed on the way home," one of the 1923 fans posted on Reddit.

As the drama continues to unfold, fans can't help but wonder if Jacob, played by the legendary Harrison Ford, will also meet his demise. At the end of the episode, Cara writes a letter to Spencer (Brendan Sklenar) informing him of the dire situation back home and urging him to come home and fight the war that has descended upon their family.

"Your brother has been killed," her letter reads. "By the time you receive this letter, I suppose your uncle has been killed as well… This ranch and your legacy are in peril. War has descended upon this place and your family. Whatever war you fight within yourself must wait. You must come home and fight this one."

While Cara's use of "suppose" leaves some room for hope that Ford's Jacob may survive the ambush, fans will have to wait until the next episode airs on January 8 to find out for sure.

"I can't believe they just killed off John Dutton Sr.!" exclaimed one fan on Twitter. "This show is getting intense!" Another fan wrote, "I'm not ready for Harrison Ford to leave us so soon. Please let Jacob survive!"

As the Dutton family continues to face one war after another, fans will be on the edge of their seats as they wait to see what fate holds for Jacob and the rest of the family in the upcoming episode of 1923.
