Wasn’t Expecting Much, But This Jason Momoa Series Hit 92% on RT — A Worthy Successor to 'Shōgun'

This one actually earns its place in the genre.
Chief of War, which premiered August 1 on Apple TV+, is a historical epic centered on Hawaiian heritage. And for Momoa, who co-created the series, it clearly means more than just another action role.
With a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and strong global numbers, it’s already one of Apple’s most talked-about titles this summer.
Set in the late 1700s, the show follows Kaiana — a warrior returning home after years away, only to find his homeland fractured and vulnerable. As foreign powers close in, he sets out on a decades-long mission to unite the islands, leading to the rise of the Hawaiian Kingdom under King Kamehameha I.
The scale is big, the storytelling grounded, and the cultural weight is felt in every scene.
Yes, people expected Game of Thrones — epic politics, brutal wars, family betrayals. But honestly? It feels closer to Shōgun. More meditative, more historical, and more emotionally centered.
The show has nine episodes total. The first two dropped August 1, with new episodes every Friday until the finale on September 19. It debuted at #6 in the U.S. and quickly cracked the top 10 in Central and South America.
