A Song of Ice and Fire’s author has been clashing with Game of Thrones’ creators for years, but at some point went further and slammed the show’s fans too — you might be wondering why, so here it is.

HBO’s Game of Thrones has been off the screen for years now, but it actually never left the global newsfeed, mostly thanks to George Martin ’s pointless updates on The Winds of Winter and, well, the scandalous season 8 not so many were even able to forget.

Released back in 2019, it was quick to push everything the show had built before down the drain, and George Martin was one of those who fiercely supported this idea.

However, the writer never took anyone’s side and opted for criticizing both Game of Thrones’ creators and fans, which is what he made clear upon season 8’s release back in the day.

George Martin Says Working on Game of Thrones Was ‘Traumatic’

It’s no secret that the author had to have some real-life battles for the show remaining faithful to its original source, though most of those he did lose to Game of Thrones’ writers and producers.

“It can be ... traumatic. Because sometimes their creative vision and your creative vision don't match, and you get the famous creative differences thing – that leads to a lot of conflict. You get totally extraneous things like the studio or the network weighing in, and they have some particular thing that has nothing to do with story, but relates to 'Well this character has a very high Q Rating so let's give him a lot more stuff to do'. [...] The [final] series has been ... not completely faithful. Otherwise, it would have to run another five seasons”, Martin revealed in an interview with Fast Company in October of 2019.

Apparently, the whole downfall of the series after its disappointing two last seasons took its toll on Martin who clearly did his best, but couldn’t really change a thing when it’s not him who’s at the helm of the entire show.

"I don't understand how people can come to hate so much something that they once loved. If you don't like a show, don't watch it! How has everything become so toxic?”, the author broke down in an interview with Independent.

The message to fans didn’t take long to receive a response, and some went into yet another clash with Martin.

“Hey George? We didn't know we hated it until after we watched it. It was all fine until that shit show of a a last (two) seasons”, Redditor Pnooms retorted.

“I'm so sick of people like GRRM who blame the Fans for mistakes that the writers/producers/directors did. Fans love good Storys and Characters. Fans hate it when these Storys and Characters turn into s—t”, another user also put in.
