The last time anyone sees D. in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, he's finally smiling again, into a kid's camcorder.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arrived on Netflix on October 20, ten episodes from director Kai Ikarashi, written and run by Bartosz Sztybor, the creator of the first series. It's a standalone sequel with a new cast, set in a Night City where corporations are at war, after the death of the first season's hero, David Martinez. D. is a netrunner out for revenge on Arasaka on behalf of his clan. Around him are Capri, an experimental AI split into two halves; Talia, the daughter of a man named Kiril; Weak Kingsley; and Roman, a film-obsessed kid who documents everything on a camcorder.

What happens to D. in the finale

The last episode, "Then Everyone Went Home," puts D. through the whole arc of the season:

  1. Brainwashed, he attacks Talia, who carries the other half of Capri on a chip in her head.
  2. When Kyoko reaches him, he tells her he no longer wants revenge on Arasaka. He only wants Capri back.
  3. Kang Tao lures Talia into the Badlands and calls in an airstrike. Kyoko answers it with a massive EMP. The blast and the missiles kill Kyoko and Kiril. D. and Talia barely survive.
  4. D. takes the chip out of Talia's head and merges the two halves of Capri into his own chip.
  5. He destroys the first wave of Arasaka and Militech soldiers sent after him.
  6. At Capri's instruction, he flies toward a distant light in the sky, a star or possibly a satellite, and smiles for Roman's camera on the way.

The episode follows him up, and never shows him come down.

What the episode leaves out

The finale is careful about what it doesn't show. There's no landing, no body and no word from D. after he leaves. The rest of the crew gets an ending on the ground: Talia, stripped of her chrome, goes to a rehab clinic with Weak, and Roman's camera pans up to a twinkling star.

Two details have fans reading more into it. D.'s first name is David, the name of the first season's lead. And Capri's draw toward the stars echoes David Martinez's girlfriend Lucy and her dream of the moon in the first series. The show confirms neither as a connection.

What Sztybor says

Sztybor has been clear that the ending isn't open to him. Asked by GamesRadar+ whether he knew what came after the season 2 finale, he said he did, for both seasons.

"I know what happens next after season two," Sztybor told GamesRadar+.

He didn't say what it is. Netflix hasn't announced a third season.
