What happened to Danny's other son on Boston Blue? With Sean in a coma, Jack's absence finally got an explanation
Boston Blue built its entire premise on one of Danny Reagan's sons and said almost nothing about the other. The answer, when it came, was sitting in the actor's real life the whole time.
Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) has two children from his marriage to Linda: Jack, born in 2000, and Sean. The CBS spinoff, which premiered October 17, 2025 in the old Blue Bloods Friday 10 p.m. slot, moves Danny to Boston because of Sean โ and leaves Jack unmentioned for weeks.
What put Danny in Boston
In the pilot, Sean (Mika Amonsen) is a Boston rookie who answers a fire alarm with fellow rookie Jonah Silver. They find Andrea Decker's body inside, murdered before the fire started. Sean goes back in and is badly hurt, and spends most of the episode in a coma before regaining consciousness at the end. Danny drives up from New York for the hospital and stays for the case, partnering with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green).
That's the setup, and it's a setup that invites an obvious question. Danny has an older son. Where is he?
The actor answer
Jack was played on Blue Bloods by Tony Terraciano, older brother of Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean on the parent show and did not carry the role into the spinoff. Tony last appeared in season 9, episode 5, when the character left for college.

The reason was scheduling in the most literal sense. Terraciano went to Vanderbilt and then enrolled at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Full-time medical school and a network drama don't coexist, and his appearances had already thinned out before he stopped entirely.

The in-show answer
The midseason finale, "Collateral Damage," aired December 20, 2025 and finally placed him: Jack is in Africa, working with Doctors Without Borders while attending medical school.
Which is, to within a continent, what the actor is actually doing.
Executive producer Brandon Sonnier has been straightforward about the mechanics of it.
"We never want to lose sight of the fact that Danny has two sons. Part of placing Jack so far away was logistical โ it gives Danny the space to fully focus on Sean right now, because there's not a lot he can do for Jack," Sonnier said in 2026.
The writers' stated position is that they track where every Reagan is, since the spinoff is an extension of the same universe rather than a reset. Jack is described as thriving, and the medical work reads as the family's service tradition pointed somewhere other than a badge.
Where that leaves the show
Sean's recovery, his rookie year, and his friendship with Jonah Silver ran through season 1, which finished its 20-episode run on May 22, 2026 and ended with Danny committing to the sergeant's exam and a hit-and-run cliffhanger on Det. Brian Rodgers. CBS renewed the show in December 2025, and it returns to Fridays at 10 this October.
For the record: the Blue Bloods universe now has three Reagan generations on two networks' worth of continuity, and Jack is the only one of Danny's kids whose career has nothing to do with a gun.
