Who killed Brandon on Sheriff Country? Not the woman who got arrested for it
CBS opened its first Fire Country spinoff by putting the sheriff's kid in an interrogation room. The answer arrived four episodes later, and it was already in the evidence bags from the pilot.
Sheriff Country premiered October 17, 2025, created by Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, and Max Thieriot, with Morena Baccarin as Sheriff Mickey Fox of Edgewater County. The pilot opens on Brandon Debrauske dead and Mickey's daughter Skye (Amanda Arcuri) standing over the body. Skye found her boyfriend, called it in, and became a person of interest inside the same hour.
Why Mickey couldn't touch the case
The conflict of interest is total, so the investigation goes to Boone — Mickey's former partner, recently passed over for the sheriff's job — and Cassidy, who happens to be dating Mickey's ex-husband Travis. Showrunner Matt Lopez described Skye as "very much a Fox," inheriting from both a criminal grandfather and a cop mother, which is a useful way to keep an audience guessing about a suspect for a month.
Skye gets arrested. Evidence against her accumulates across episodes 2 and 3 alongside a robbery and an arrested DEA official, and the show does nothing to reassure anyone that she's innocent.
The logo on the pills
The break comes in episode 4, "Out of Office," which aired November 7, 2025. Two pieces of physical evidence close it:
- The pills — seized during the pilot and sitting in the evidence locker, stamped with a dealer's logo.
- The burner phone — showing that the same dealer had been leaning on Brandon over money the night he died.
The dealer is Adrian Smith. He killed Brandon over a debt.

Mickey, formally off the case, works it anyway. She breaks into the evidence locker to photograph the pills, traces the logo, and then goes to Smith's house alone, where the confrontation nearly ends with her dead.

The rescue that burned a cover
She's saved by the man she'd been seeing, who shoots Smith and is revealed in the process as an undercover DEA agent. The save ends his operation — cover blown, reassignment required — which is the kind of trade the show keeps making all season.
Skye is cleared. She gives Brandon's lyric book to his mother.
Executive producer Joan Rater, in 2025: "The mystery and what happens with the death of Brandon and Skye and her involvement will take us to places that are truly shocking."
Lopez had said up front that the mystery "will not last the entire season," but promised "ripple effects and continuing twists," which is exactly what the resolution produces. District Attorney Ruben Massey takes over, clashes with Boone about how the case was worked, and the friction between the sheriff's department and the DA's office becomes a season-long engine.
Solving it in episode 4 of 20 is the unusual structural choice here. The arrest is the setup; the fallout is the show.
The DEA thread runs all the way to the finale on May 22, 2026, where the same agent is exposed as dirty, confesses to multiple killings, and is shot dead — by an FBI deputy director who then turns out to be Mickey's mother, long presumed dead.
Season 1 ran 20 episodes and drew 4.38 million viewers for the pilot, finishing at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67 on Metacritic. CBS renewed it in December 2025, and season 2 premieres October 9, 2026.
