Who is the serial killer on Sheriff Country? The Blood Moon clue was hiding on the county seal
Sheriff Mickey Fox spends two episodes chasing a marking she can't source, left at scenes across Edgewater County. It turns out to be a piece of local government stationery that stopped being current decades ago.
Sheriff Country premiered on CBS on October 17, 2025, the first spinoff of Fire Country, grown out of a backdoor pilot in that show's second season. Morena Baccarin stars as Mickey Fox, with Matt Lauria as Lt. Nathan Boone, Michele Weaver as Deputy Cassidy Campbell, Christopher Gorham as ADA Travis Fraley and W. Earl Brown as Wes Fox. Season 1 ran 20 episodes to May 22, 2026. The Blood Moon case runs through episode 14, "Show of Force," and resolves in episode 15.
The symbol
The mark the press and the department nickname the Blood Moon is not an occult sigil or a signature the killer invented. Mickey works out that it matches an archaic version of the Edgewater County seal — a design retired long enough ago that nobody currently working recognizes it.
The implication lands immediately, because a retired county seal is not public art. It's a uniform patch.
If the mark came off a county seal, the killer didn't pick it up somewhere. He was issued it.
The name
The Blood Moon Killer is Ellis Monroe, a former officer of the Edgewater County Sheriff's Department. He was dismissed after a complaint about his conduct involving a young woman he presented as his daughter — a detail filed away and not connected to anything until Mickey goes back through it.

The department's own paperwork contained both halves of the case: the symbol and the man.

The accomplice
The complication is that Monroe has a verified alibi for the night Deputy Cassidy Campbell disappears, which means someone else was moving for him. The raid on his house produces the answer.
The woman he had been presenting as his daughter, Dana, is Stephanie Witwer — a social worker who had been working the case alongside the department. She was Monroe's first victim. She survived by becoming complicit, and captives held in the basement were made to call Monroe "Father."
Key facts from the resolution:
- Cassidy is found alive in the basement, along with another surviving victim, Jane Yarrow.
- Zoey's name is carved into a beam down there — Cassidy's sister, missing for years, which is why Cassidy pushed the case in the first place.
- Mickey shoots Monroe as he holds a knife to Cassidy's throat.
- Dana leads investigators to the remains, closing out every open disappearance attached to the seal.
- An eight-year flashback establishes that Mickey pulled Cassidy out of an abusive home long before either wore a badge, which is what the final standoff is trading on.
After
Cassidy steps away from the department to recover, and the episode closes on her driving the car she restored with her mother. The series was renewed in December 2025; season 2 premieres October 9, 2026, with Amanda Arcuri and Ian Quinlan promoted to regulars.
Season 1 finished at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67 on Metacritic. The Blood Moon block is the stretch most reviewers pointed at.
