What happened to Leon in The Drop? Not what Snowfall's ending promised him
Snowfall ended in 2023 by giving Leon Simmons the cleanest exit in the whole cast. The Drop's first season ends with him walking out a door in the opposite direction.
When Snowfall wrapped its sixth and final season in 2023, almost everyone paid for the cocaine years. Leon Simmons (Isaiah John) was the exception: he got out, got married and put his money back into South Central. The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, FX's spin-off set in 1990, picks him up four years later. Its season 1 finale aired October 27, and Leon's last scene undoes almost everything that ending gave him.
John has said from the start that Leon's peace was never as solid as it looked.
"I don't think that he's made peace with it."

What Snowfall promised him
Here's where Snowfall left him, per TV Insider's refresher:
- Wanda: He and Wanda Bell (Gail Bean), clean after a long recovery, reconnect, travel to Accra, Ghana, and get married before coming home to Los Angeles.
- The clinic: Back in South Central, he uses what's left of his drug money to fund a free legal clinic.
- The game: He walks away from dealing for good and puts his energy into the community he helped damage.
Compare that with his oldest friend. Snowfall's last look at Franklin Saint shows him broke, drinking heavily and about to lose his mother's house. Leon was the one who got out clean, and the show's ending was built on that contrast.
Where The Drop finds him
Four years on, almost every piece of that ending has a crack in it:
- The marriage: Leon and Wanda are separated.
- The clinic: It still runs, but out of the building of Black Banner, the rap label owned by former gangster Darryl "DG" Grant. When detectives come by about a murder, they warn that more violence could end the deal that keeps the clinic open, per Primetimer.
- The secret: Leon knows that DG was behind the murder of Keith, and he keeps it from Dara (Aleyse Shannon), the woman he's been falling for and Keith's best friend.
John told Moviefone the clinic is "running him dry." The legal work was Leon's way of repaying a neighborhood he once flooded with crack. In 1990, the place he does it depends on a former gangster's record label staying out of trouble.
The finale
Leon's secret is what costs him. Wanda, at war with DG, tells Dara that Leon knew who killed Keith and uses it to bring her onto her side. Dara's trust in Leon doesn't survive it.

He shows up for her anyway. When DG and one of his men chase Dara into an alley, Leon shoots the associate and drives DG to a place called Tino's, where he leaves him screaming, per TV Insider's finale breakdown.

Then Wanda comes to the clinic. Leon accuses her of manipulating everyone, and she walks away saying it's better than being invisible. The next morning he packs up the last of his things, looks at a framed photo of Cissy Saint (Michael Hyatt), Franklin's mother and the woman who inspired his dream, takes a gun from his desk and leaves. The photo stays behind.
Snowfall let Leon buy his way out with drug money. The Drop spent eight episodes showing what that money was still connected to, then handed him a gun on his way out the door.
What comes next
None of the recaps say where Leon is headed, and the show doesn't either. Within one night he has lost Dara, his marriage is over for good, and his clinic is packed into a box. FX hasn't renewed The Drop yet.
Snowfall ended with Leon as its one success story. If The Drop gets a season 2, he starts it with no clinic, no wife and a gun from his own desk.
