Who is the New York Ripper in Dexter: Resurrection? Season 2 names him early — the whole fight is proving it
Dexter: Resurrection found the New York Ripper's name in a billionaire's files before season 1 was over. Season 2 starts with that name and a detective who already failed to catch him once.
The name came first. In the season 1 finale, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) goes through Leon Prater's files on serial killers, and they identify the New York Ripper as Don Framt, a killer who terrorized New York for decades and was never caught. Season 2 premieres Friday, October 30, on Paramount+, with Brian Cox as the Ripper. Paramount describes him as a killer who "once terrorized New York City" and who, though no longer killing, "continues to psychologically torment his survivors."
Proving it is the hard part. The only evidence so far is a file Dexter read while locked in a vault, Paramount's cast page doesn't put the name Don Framt next to Cox, and the detective who chased the Ripper for years never got close.
What season 1 told us
The Ripper was a ghost story for most of the first season. What the show established:
- The case: He killed for decades, and NYPD detective Claudette Wallace (Kadia Saraf) was the one who failed to catch him, per TheWrap.
- The weapon: A long rod with a hooked blade, a bloodied sewer-grate hook that Wallace and her partner Oliva recover, per Soap Central. A matching weapon sits among the trophies in Leon Prater's vault.
- The calls: He stopped killing but never stopped calling the survivors.
- The name: In the finale, Prater (Peter Dinklage) locks Dexter in that vault for three days. Searching for the door code, Dexter finds a cabinet of serial killer files, and Prater's records name the Ripper as Mr. Don Framt.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips has been open about where the character came from. He told the Dark Passengers podcast in November 2025 that fans went wild over Framt, which pushed the writers to think harder about him, and that "he'll be in the second season," per Dexerto.
Every suspect the fans got wrong
While the Ripper was faceless, fans built a long list. TV Insider rounded them up in August 2025:
- Jonah Mitchell: The Trinity Killer's son, backed by theories about his voice and a cast member's post about New York.
- Blessing Kamara (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine): The ride-share driver with a child-soldier past and a cat collection fans compared to Trinity's home.
- Leon Prater: The billionaire who owns the weapon, with one theory claiming the Ripper raised him.
- Charley (Uma Thurman): Prater's security chief, suspected of killing on his behalf.
- Claudette Wallace herself: Fans read her obsession with the case as experience rather than research.
Phillips shut down the most popular one himself. Asked on the Love It Film podcast whether Jonah was the Ripper, he answered directly.
"I'll tell you this. The answer is no."

The answer turned out to be someone who wasn't in season 1 at all. Every theory pointed at a character already on screen, and the show cast an 80-year-old newcomer.
Why Brian Cox
Cox's casting was announced on April 2, 2026, the same month season 2 started filming in New York. He's best known now as Logan Roy in Succession, but horror fans will remember he was the screen's first Hannibal Lecktor, in 1986's Manhunter. Dexter has cast the original movie cannibal as the city's oldest unsolved killer.

Phillips gave Entertainment Weekly one detail about how we first see him, per FanBolt.
"We meet him and he's in a wheelchair."
— Clyde Phillips, to Entertainment Weekly
The season's logline puts Dexter "caught between two killers — one with decades of notoriety and a lifetime of kills behind him," and the other "a fresh young face terrorizing New York in ways no one has ever seen." The second one is Dan Stevens as the Five Borough Killer, a Zodiac-style murderer who taunts the police with phone calls threatening to kill innocent people, per TVLine.
Season 2 hands Dexter two killers with the same habit. The old one phones the families of the people he killed, and the young one phones the police about the people he's going to kill.
Krysten Ritter returns as Lady Vengeance, Eric Stonestreet as Rapunzel, a survivor of Prater's killer club, and Gabriel Luna joins as the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger. The season premieres October 30, and the man who found Framt's name in a locked vault is about to meet him in a wheelchair.
