What happened to Randy in NCIS: Origins? The season 2 cliffhanger, and what Caleb Foote has said about season 3
Season 2 spent eighteen episodes tidying up, and then took eight seconds to undo all of it. The misdirection in that scene is the part worth explaining.
Special Agent Bernard "Randy" Randolf, played by Caleb Foote, is the Camp Pendleton office's golden boy and, for most of season 2, the guy doing the least glamorous job in the building. The season 2 finale, "Hollywood Ending," aired on 5 May 2026 and closed out the NIS-to-NCIS rebrand, the Abbe Pruitt storyline, and a Gibbs and Lala scene that fans had waited two seasons for. Then it ended on Randy.
What actually happens
Lala is the one who clocks the suspicious SUV, which is precisely what the scene wants you to do — assume she's the target. She isn't. The vehicle is there for Randy, and he's taken.
The reason is the job nobody thought was dangerous. Across season 2, Randy has been digitizing the agency's paper archive — first the closed case files, then, as co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal put it, the evidence logs.
"He was entering all the past cases, and then... he's now digitizing all of the evidence logs. So, all the evidence across the entire agency," Monreal told Parade in 2026.
That's NIS offices worldwide, run through one clerk's terminal. Somebody with something in one of those logs worked out what that means before the office did.
What Caleb Foote has said
Foote has been talking about the cliffhanger since it aired, and his read on it is less dire than the setup suggests.
- On why it's Randy — "if anyone were to be kidnapped, you would want it to be Randy. I think he's the guy that could get out of getting kidnapped the most unscathed," he told TV Insider in 2026.
- On Randy in captivity — "Randy probably isn't going to lose his golden retriever fortitude. I think Randy is going to remain the same optimistic guy even in captivity."
- On the finale itself — he told TVLine in 2026 that season 1's Lala cliffhanger was the best finale he'd ever been part of, "and I think this one tops it."
- On the structure — speaking to Fangirlish, he noted the episode closes its own loops first: "We cleaned up all of these storylines; we defeated Abbe Pruitt. We still exist as an office, and boom, we get the kiss, but then you have to ask more questions."
The most useful thing he's said has nothing to do with season 3. Foote revealed that showrunners David J. North and Gina Monreal originally had a different plan for the character entirely.
"We wanted to make a character so lovable that you couldn't kill them. And then we were going to kill them off," Foote said the showrunners told him, per Fangirlish in 2026.
They decided against it. The kidnapping is what the idea turned into.
What season 3 is set up to do
North has said Randy's fate is the first order of business, describing him as a character now in real peril. Season 3 premieres on 6 October 2026 with a reduced order of 10 episodes, down from season 2's 18, and Mark Harmon returns as an on-screen presence in all of them as the older Gibbs rather than only as narrator.
For the record: the finale also delivered the Gibbs and Lala scene, with Gibbs telling her "I wish it could have lasted forever" — and Monreal declining to confirm what happened after the cut to black.
