What happened to Randy on NCIS: Origins? Older Gibbs calls it a price he's still paying, 34 years on
NCIS: Origins ended season 2 with its computer guy disappearing into a van. Season 3 got him back alive, and Mark Harmon's Gibbs says that rescue came at a price he's paying in 2026.
Randy survived. The NCIS: Origins season 3 premiere, "Don't You Forget About Me," aired on CBS on October 6, 2026, and the team pulls Randy (Caleb Foote) out of a burning trailer moments before it explodes. Russian operatives had kidnapped him for his computer password. He stayed alive by slowing his pulse with a Marine breathing technique Gibbs taught him, so his captors thought he was already dead.
The premiere also ties the case to the present day. In 2026, someone shoots Mark Harmon's older Gibbs outside his Alaska cabin, and his narration names the reason, per TVLine: "saving Randy came at a price," and "34 years later, I'd be paying mine."
How Randy got taken
The season 2 finale shut down the Camp Pendleton office and ended with Randy kidnapped, per TV Insider. The abduction was tied to the files he had spent the season digitizing, work he hoped would earn him a spot in Naples. Showrunner David J. North said at the time that Randy "was grabbed really in a dangerous situation."
Season 3 picks up the morning after a party, in 1992. Gibbs and Lala get called to a dead Marine in a public bathroom, and the team assumes Randy is sleeping it off until his car turns up abandoned with his belongings still inside.
How the team found him
The rescue runs on Randy's own clues and Gibbs's old training, per The TV Cave's recap:
- The signal: Gas station security footage shows the kidnappers' taillights blinking in a pattern. Gibbs reads it as Morse code spelling "USSR," sent by Randy from inside the car.
- The informant: Vlad, a Russian informant the team once set up with his own Blockbuster Video, recognizes one kidnapper by his limp and names him: Maxim.
- The trailer: The team finds Maxim trying to burn a trailer down with Randy chained inside, beaten and apparently without a pulse.
- The trick: Randy had used the breathing technique Gibbs taught him to convince the Russians he was dead. The team gets him out before the trailer goes up.
Randy never gave up his password. Maxim didn't need it: it was written on a note in Randy's wallet. By the time Randy tries to change it, his whole computer has already been stolen.

The leak runs back inside the agency. The dead Marine from the bathroom had been a driver for Barrett, the disgraced former director, and the team finds that Barrett was selling military secrets to the Russians. He leaves in handcuffs.
The price Gibbs is still paying
The premiere opens in Alaska, in 2026. Two gunmen shoot older Gibbs in the chest, check his pulse and leave, one of them saying, "One down, one to go." Gibbs survives on the same trick he once taught Randy, slowing his heart until they believe he's dead. Then he takes his sniper rifle and leaves Alaska.
"Him being shot wouldn't be enough to get him to leave."
— David J. North, showrunner, to TheWrap
North finished the thought in the same interview: what moves Gibbs is learning that someone else he cares about is in danger. The show hasn't said who the second "one" is. It has said, through Harmon's narration, that "the ghosts from my past found me" and that "it all started back then," with Randy's case in 1992.

The breathing technique is the cleanest piece of plotting in the premiere. Young Gibbs teaches it, Randy uses it to survive the Russians, and 34 years later it keeps Gibbs alive long enough to go hunting for whoever came back for that case.
Where Randy goes from here
Randy comes out of the trailer beaten, with his computer gone, and the show isn't pretending that disappears overnight. North told TheWrap he'll have "some residual effects from what happened," but that he recovers fast.
"Junie and Junior and this job are what matters to him."
— David J. North, on Randy's recovery, to TheWrap
Randy survived Russian kidnappers by faking his own death with a technique from a Marine. The thing that got the secrets stolen anyway was a password written on a note in his wallet.
