What happens to Claire's brother in Outlander: Blood of My Blood — the theory tying him straight to Jamie's family tree
Claire has no brother in Diana Gabaldon's novels. The prequel gave her one, then handed him a second identity before he was a week old.
The baby is William Henry Beauchamp, born 5 July 1714 to Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) — Claire's parents, who in this telling fell through the stones at Craigh na Dun out of 1918 and landed in the 1710s, the same decade Jamie Fraser's parents are living through. That coincidence is the entire engine of the theory.
The two names
Julia's problem is Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat (Tony Curran), who is not a man you want taking an interest in a child. Her solution has two halves. She slept with Lovat so he would accept the pregnancy as his, and a public christening followed in which the boy is entered as Simon Fraser. Privately, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) baptizes him as William Henry Beauchamp — a real name, on the record, not attached to Lovat.

Publicly he is a Fraser and Lovat's son. Privately he is a Beauchamp and Claire's brother. Both entries exist.
The theory
The version that keeps circulating routes William into Jamie's household rather than Lovat's. Under it, Brian and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) take the child in, and William grows up as Willie — Jamie's older brother, the one who dies of smallpox in childhood, and the one Jamie later names his own son after.
The appeal is obvious and the arithmetic is awkward. Cinemablend laid out both in 2026.
The theory would mean "Jamie unknowingly fell in love with his brother's biological sister," Cinemablend wrote, while noting the catch: Willie died young, so he can never meet the adult Claire.
The competing theory keeps the public name and runs William forward as Simon Fraser, the Young Fox — the Lovat heir Jamie and Claire meet in Outlander season 2 while trying to secure Lovat's backing for the rising. That one survives into Claire's timeline, and stumbles on the ages.
Why the family tree makes it sting
Either reading puts Claire's brother inside Jamie's immediate family. One makes Jamie's grandfather the man raising him. The other makes Jamie's parents. For a show whose premise is that these two families have been brushing against each other for a generation, that's the point rather than an accident:
- Ellen MacKenzie — Jamie's mother, sister to Colum, Dougal, Janet and Jocasta.
- Brian Fraser — Jamie's father, Lovat's illegitimate son by Davina Porter (Sara Vickers), and the man who performs the private baptism.
- Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser (Rory Alexander) — Brian's cousin and Jamie's future godfather.
- Lord Lovat — Jamie's grandfather, and on paper William's.
What season 2 can do about it
Season 2 premiered on Starz on 18 September 2026, picking up from the finale's cliffhanger at the stones after Arch Bug caught up with Julia and Henry. The trailer resolves the immediate question: only Henry made it through. Julia stayed behind — and so, as far as anything on screen has shown, did the baby.
Which means the show has three seasons' worth of room to decide whose surname William keeps.
