What is "Toad in the Hole"? The 3-Ingredient British Classic That Will Change Your Dinner Game
A perfect option for those looking for a new taste with the same simple ingredients.
After a hard day at work, the only thing you might wish is for dinner to be made on its own and served at your family table. Well, though this is unlikely to happen, you can still make your dinner routine way easier thanks to several simple recipes that will offer you a completely new experience without having to use some exotic ingredients.
Those also include this recipe for the classic British dish called toad in the hole, which is basically sausages baked with cheese and vegetables. Try it once, and you won’t stop making it at least once a week.
Here’s what you need: 6 pork sausages, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 250 g of tomatoes, 2 eggs, 100 g of flour, 250 ml of milk, 20 g of grated cheese, 2 tsp of whole-grain mustard, thyme, 2 red onions, 1 tbsp of red wine vinegar, 250 ml of broth, salt to taste.
Cut the sausages into pieces (or leave them whole), place them in a greased baking dish, and bake at 220 °C for about 10 minutes, until golden brown. Meanwhile, mix the eggs, flour, milk, cheese, mustard, and salt until you have a smooth batter.
Remove the baking dish, add the chopped tomatoes and thyme, then pour the batter over everything and put it back in the oven for another 15 minutes.
While it’s baking, prepare the onion sauce: chop the onion, fry until soft, add a little flour, then vinegar and broth. Simmer for a few minutes until slightly thickened. Serve hot, with the sauce.
After frying the sausages, don’t let the pan cool down; the batter should be poured directly into the hot pan, so it sets immediately and rises well. Also, don’t open the oven while baking: due to the temperature change, the batter may settle and won’t develop a fluffy texture.
