The Legend of Korra asked viewers to accept a seventy-year gap and a city that had replaced four nations. The new series asks for considerably more than that, and the size of the ask is the whole design.

Seven Havens is set 225 years after The Legend of Korra. Stacked against the seventy years between Aang's finale and Korra's premiere, that's more than three times the distance — and it lands in a world where the Four Nations and Republic City no longer exist at all.

Running the calendar

The franchise dates by AG, meaning After Genocide, counting from the Air Nomad massacre that opens the backstory. Those numbers put the jump in perspective:

  • 100 AG — the summer Aang defeats Ozai; the end of The Last Airbender.
  • 153 AG — Aang dies at 66. Korra is born the same year.
  • 170 AG — Korra arrives in Republic City. Book 1 begins.
  • 174 AG — the events of Book 4 and the finale.
  • roughly 399 AG — 225 years on from Korra's last appearance.

That is the working answer, with one caveat worth stating plainly: the show has not put a year on screen, and the AG system is a convention the franchise uses in supporting material rather than a date stamp in the episodes. What Paramount+ and the creative team have committed to is the 225-year figure.

What fits inside 225 years

Enough for the world to forget who was at fault and keep the grudge. Between Korra and Pavi, a cataclysm leveled the Four Nations and Republic City, the spirit and human realms bled into each other through portals Korra opened, and the survivors consolidated into seven fortified city-states. Permanent auroras sit over a landscape of storms and sandstorms.

Korra is not a revered figure in this world. She is blamed for the disaster, which makes the Avatar a warning rather than a rescue.

The show has not said what the cataclysm was. DiMartino has framed the unanswered questions as the engine: how the world got this bad, and why everyone hates the Avatar.

Why the world looks less like ours

Producer Ethan Spaulding has attributed the visual shift directly to the length of the gap.

"Viewers will notice Seven Havens has more of a fantasy look. The real-world elements are still there in a less obvious way," Spaulding said in 2026.

Korra's era was industrial — automobiles, radio, pro bending arenas, an electrified Republic City modeled on 1920s Manhattan. Two and a quarter centuries and one extinction-level event later, that technology is gone rather than advanced. Cultures that were distinct in Aang's day have blended. The Seven Havens are described by the production as the central pillars of civilization risen from a shattered world, which is a polite way of saying everything between them is uninhabitable.

How old is Pavi in Avatar: Seven Havens? Aang was 12, Korra was 17 — the new Avatar is younger than both

One structural consequence

A 225-year gap means Korra had at least one successor between her and Pavi, and probably several, none of whom the audience has met. The Avatar cycle runs Water to Earth to Fire to Air; Korra was a waterbender and Pavi is an earthbender, which technically allows Pavi to be the very next Avatar in line — an option that would put a 225-year hole in the cycle and leave the world Avatar-less for most of it.

The series premieres October 9, 2026 on Paramount+, three episodes at a time across four Fridays. Whether the gap is empty or crowded is the kind of thing DiMartino means by calling this a mystery show.
