Somewhere between your third rewatch of The Sopranos and your annual "should I finally do Peaky Blinders" crisis, MGM+ went ahead and made a gangster show about the Irish. The Westies, starring J.K. Simmons and his extremely load-bearing mustache, is set in 1980 — early-'80s Hell's Kitchen, to be precise, back when the neighborhood was less "brunch line for a matcha croissant" and more "do not make eye contact on Tenth Avenue."
Why 1980, Specifically
The whole season is built around the construction of the Javits Center landing right on the gang's home turf, dangling a money pile in front of a crew that was never going to say no to a money pile. Co-creator Chris Brancato — the Narcos and Godfather of Harlem guy, so he's been in this sandbox before — told Deadline the year was a deliberate pick:
"We started in 1980 because we wanted to capture that period of time."

About that name
Here's the part I find genuinely funny: the real gang did not call themselves the Westies. That label got slapped on them from the outside — the actual crew was just, you know, the guys from the West Side. Brancato traced the lineage for Men's Journal, explaining that before them, "there was formerly a gang called The Arsenal Gang," which gave way to the Westies in the '60s — a crew that ran Hell's Kitchen into the '80s and developed an in-house generational feud along the way.
