Where is Netflix's Umthetho filmed? One tower in the skyline gives the answer away
Netflix's Umthetho turns its city into a full-blown character. Here's where the South African crime drama was filmed — and the landmark that quietly gives the location away.
You could watch Umthetho with the location data stripped out and still call it within one establishing shot, because there it is: the Hillbrow Tower, jabbing out of the skyline like a pushpin on a map labeled YOU ARE IN JOHANNESBURG. Netflix's prosecutor-versus-prison-syndicate drama was shot entirely in South Africa, and Joburg isn't just the backdrop — it's practically billed above half the cast.
Joburg, playing itself, no understudy
Per The Cinemaholic, production unfolded in and around Johannesburg, with principal photography reportedly running for a couple of months in 2025 under Black Brain Pictures — the outfit behind Lockdown and DiepCity, so this is not their first time turning South African streets into a pressure cooker. The city map of the show splits neatly in two:
- Mbali's world: courtrooms, offices, the polished machinery of the law;
- Moses's world: the prison and the streets that feed it, where the machinery is anything but polished.
Location sleuths at Tonboriday note that the production kept exact addresses quiet while cameras rolled — partly standard practice, partly because nobody wants fans turning a working set into a walking tour. The Hillbrow Tower, though? Can't hide 269 metres of telecom concrete. It shows up and testifies.
Long days, longer nights, industrial quantities of coffee
Director Mandla N summed up the shoot with the honesty of a man still recovering, thanking his crew for a production that involved, in his words, "long days, sleepless nights, and enough coffee to keep a small country awake."
The city practically auditioned for a lead role and got it.
Given that the finished show treats Johannesburg less like scenery and more like a co-conspirator, the coffee was clearly worth it.
