Who is Chimera on Mistletoe Murders? Emily coined the name herself
Hallmark's coziest Christmas mystery has a terror cell in its heroine's past. The most uncomfortable detail is that the cell's name was hers to begin with.
Chimera is the online alias Emily Lane (Sarah Drew) chose as a teenager, back when her name was Grace. She and her partner hacked under that name, and TV Insider's season 3 preview describes Chimera as a hacker group that became a domestic terror cell. Emily left it behind and rebuilt her life in the small town of Fletcher's Grove. Season 3 of the Hallmark series, which premieres November 5, 2026, opens with her old partner at her door.
Mistletoe Murders started as an Audible original by Ken Cuperus, who runs the TV version. Season 1 launched on Hallmark+ in 2024, season 2 aired on Hallmark Channel in November 2025, and both seasons arrive on Netflix in the US on November 1, 2026, per What's on Netflix.
How Grace became Chimera
Season 2 told Emily's backstory in flashbacks, starting with its first mystery, "Cold War," in November 2025. Quincy Kirkwood plays the younger Emily, per TV Fanatic, and the story comes out in pieces, per The Viewer's Perspective:
- The name: At the end of "Cold War," teenage Grace picks her online name: Chimera.
- The partner: Aaron, her only friend and first love, got her into a coding club. Together they ran bigger and bigger hacks, including stealing from an oil billionaire to fund an ocean cleanup.
- The break: Grace found messages on Aaron's computer tying him to terrorist funding networks. She disabled the machine, but Aaron got away before the police arrived, and Grace was the one arrested.
- The deal: She cooperated with federal authorities, who offered her a deal to help them find Aaron.
TV Fanatic's reviewer guessed that Aaron inspired the name, since he was the one obsessed with Greek mythology. The show answers that guess directly: Grace is the one who chooses it.
A chimera is a monster stitched together from different animals. A teenage hacker, a federal informant and a small-town amateur sleuth is a fair description of the woman who named it.
The season 2 cliffhanger
In the season 2 finale, Emily finally tells detective Sam Wilner (Peter Mooney) part of the truth: she once worked in intelligence and was hunting someone who betrayed her. She describes it as the point when Grace died and Emily was born. Then Sam texts that he's coming over with coffee and pastries, someone knocks on her door, and it's Aaron (Aaron Ashmore), per People.
"We kick off the season with him at the door."
— Ken Cuperus, showrunner, to TV Insider
What season 3 does with Chimera
Season 3 runs six episodes, from November 5 to December 10, 2026, and returns to Emily's Chimera years in flashbacks. Catherine Bell joins for the opening case as the wife of the town's Christmas chairman, a woman the characters start to suspect of being a black widow.

Emily also starts the season with another secret. Drew told TV Insider that even though Emily promised Sam no more secrets, "she has another secret that she's not allowed to tell him." Cuperus says her past may force her to "give up her life" in Fletcher's Grove.

That's the cost of having coined the name yourself. Emily can tell Sam she was hunting a man who betrayed her, and that's true. But the group that ended up a terror cell carried the name she chose, and Aaron, now standing at her door, knows exactly who came up with it.
