Who Is Hester Frump in ‘Wednesday’ & Why Fans Are So Confused About Her

Introduced in the second season, the character had a major impact on Wednesday’s investigation and might show up again in this instalment’s upcoming part 2.
Things are about to go even crazier in Wednesday’s season 2 volume 2 now that Jenna Ortega’s titular character knows the truth behind some of the Willow Hill Hospital’s darkest secrets.
In the first part’s finale, Wednesday discovers a locked facility with long-lost outcasts imprisoned in there, with many of those being considered officially dead.
Since Wednesday can’t use her psychic abilities for a while, she has to look for ways more mundane to delve into all kinds of documents that entangle her investigation even more — and this is where Hester Frump, Wednesday’s new character, comes to rescue.
Despite being featured for a couple of minutes only, the Addams’ new family member is already an iconic figure that still confused the original story’s fans.
Who Is Hester Frump in ‘Wednesday’ Season 2?
In the show’s new season, Hester Frump is the wealthy and calculating mother of Morticia Addams, as well as Wednesday and Pugsley’s maternal grandmother (aka Grandmama).
Hester is introduced as a successful businesswoman who built her own empire as the owner of Frump Mortuaries, a popular mortuary business catering to outcasts.
Even though Hester struggles to find common ground with her daughter Morticia, things are way easier with Wednesday who considers Grandmama her favorite relative.
In fact, Hester comes as far as helping her granddaughter with the latter’s investigation, leading Wednesday to realisation that the Willow Hill faked its incarcerated outcasts’ deaths while their urns were filled with animal remains.
‘Wednesday’ Fans Are Confused Over Grandmama Hester
This might have gone unnoticed by those who aren’t quite familiar with The Addams Family’s previous adaptations, but fans of the original story didn’t really buy Grandmama’s upgraded look.
In some of the earlier movies and shows, Grandmama was introduced as a disheveled and witchy-looking old lady who lived with the Addams. But in Tim Burton’s version, Hester Frump looks all chic and wealthy, living somewhere away from her daughter’s family.
As some grasped a bit later, in other adaptations Grandmama was Gomez’s mother and in Wednesday she’s introduced as Morticia’s mother, though the Grandmama nickname has traditionally belonged to the former.
"There's different versions of Grandmama. The one that lives with the Addams is usually Gomez's mother. It's only the 1991 movie and its sequel where she's Morticia's mother. At least to my knowledge. His mother in Wednesday might be more like that Grandmama”, Redditor beekee404 explained in a thread.
“I like this version, it's just a different take on the character”, Built4dominance added.
Wednesday’s season 2 volume 2 is coming to Netflix on September 3.
