Who Is Jesse Plemons’ Plutarch Heavensbee? The Secret Rebel Mastermind in The Hunger Games, Explained

The Hunger Games’ next prequel will drop a bombshell about one of the closest people to President Snow, proving that Plutarch’s story holds much more than just a Head Gamemaker status. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Hunger Games ’ next spinoff movie titled Sunrise on the Reaping has now officially found its younger version of Plutarch Heavensbee, in the new film portrayed by Jesse Plemons, according to Variety.
The character, who in the original movie series was played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, takes on the role almost as pivotal as President Snow’s in all the Hunger Games, though he’s far from a villain anyway.
Before the upcoming movie proves it once again, we break down on what Plutarch has to do with the biggest rebellion in Panem’s history (spoiler: a lot).
Plutarch Heavensbee’s Backstory, Explained
Plutarch comes from the Heavensbees, one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the Capitol, and is a descendant of Hilarius Heavensbee, President Snow’s classmate at the time they were both mentors for the 10th Hunger Games.
Eventually, Plutarch gets himself a pretty good position in Snow’s government, becoming the Head Gamemaker after Snow brutally kills Seneca Crane, but soon realises the Hunger Games aren’t actually necessary anymore and turns into a secret rebel-insider.
During the 50th Hunger Games, Plutarch first serves as a cameraman who records the reaping process in District 12, later making several attempts to earn Haymitch Abernathy’s trust and even inciting him to blow up the water tank hidden in the arena’s forests.
What Happens to Plutarch in The Hunger Games Original Movies?
After the events of the third Quarter Quell during which Plutarch saves Katniss, Peeta and some other tributes by taking them away from the arena, Katniss finds out about Plutarch’s role in an undercover group that has been aiming at overthrowing the Capitol.
Initially having no trust for him, Katniss gets closer to Plutarch when he becomes the leader of the second rebellion against the Capitol and President Snow.
In the end, Plutarch gets out of the war just fine, becoming the Secretary of Communications after preventing Effie Trinket’s execution and getting a witness role in Katniss' trial for President Coin’s murder.
