Who Is Mr. Crowther in ‘The Gilded Age’ & What Happened to Him After That Shocking Scam?

Mark Boyett’s character is nowhere to be found in The Gilded Age’s season 3, but he has a direct connection to a major return in one of the recent episodes.
In case you thought there was no need to keep characters from past seasons in your mind for now, The Gilded Age’s ongoing third instalment is here to remind you that it’s a bad idea.
Having premiered back in June, the show’s new season is just a couple of episodes away from its potentially high-stakes finale, bringing in more and more shocking returns and plot twists as it proceeds.
Particularly, season 3 episode 5 saw the series’ most controversial duo back in action, with the next episode conveniently offering an explanation for what really happened between Maud Beaton and Mr. Crowther.
Who Is Mr. Crowther in ‘The Gilded Age’?
Even though he hasn’t been there for long enough to be remembered that well, Mr. Crowther quickly reminded The Gilded Age’s viewers of himself when Maud Beaton made a sudden appearance in episode 5.
In the show’s second season, Maud was introduced as a wealthy and charming socialite, rumoured to be Jay Gould’s illegitimate daughter, who quickly makes Oscar van Rhijn fall for her and consider a potential candidate for marriage.
Things start swirling dramatically when Maud lures Oscar into investing money in her friend Mr. Crowther’s business, leading to Oscar losing all of his own and his family’s funds.
In the third season, however, he suddenly encounters Maud in the Haymarket, with the latter explaining that she too was fooled by Mr. Crowther and now is forced to work as a prostitute to make money.
Without much hesitation, Oscar gives Maud a train ticket back to her hometown and $100, which is around $3 million in today’s money.
‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 Episode 6 Major Plot Twist Will Make Oscar Go Through Even More (Heavy Spoilers Ahead!)
As if life hasn’t been cruel enough to Oscar before, the show’s latest episode is about to make the character’s life all the way more tragic now that one of his loved ones is gone.
The Gilded Age’s latest episode ends on Oscar’s secret lover John Adams being hit by a horse carriage as soon as he’s out in the street, with Oscar being the witness of what has just happened.
The show’s fans couldn’t help but feel for Oscar whose path towards happiness is filled with betrayals and major losses, though The Gilded Age’s creators think this will be exactly what will help Oscar change for the better.
“Those shocking things are true in life. I’ve certainly experienced those traumas. They change you, and we wanted to bring about that change in Oscar”, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield said in an interview with TVLine upon the episode’s release.
When Will ‘The Gilded Age’ Next Episode Be Released?
The show’s next episode is coming to HBO Max on August 3.
