The Hunger Games’ original movie series starred the actor as one of Katniss Everdeen’s most important allies during the Rebellion. Here’s everything to know about Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Gamemaker who is also set to return in the upcoming prequel titled Sunrise on the Reaping.

The Hunger Games’ franchise is about to come back with a new prequel next year, also dropping some bombshells about the original movie series’ returning characters.

Set around 24 years before The Hunger Games’ events, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will take a closer look at the younger versions of the Capitol’s rulers, including a major character portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the original trilogy.

Now with another actor replacing late Seymour Hoffman in Sunrise on the Reaping, the movie will be expanding the storyline of probably the biggest rebel in President Snow’s surroundings.

In the original movie series, the actor played the already middle-aged Head Gamemaker who was promoted ahead of the 75th Hunger Games, right after the previous Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane was brutally killed by President Snow.

Born into one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the entire Capitol, Plutarch has been scheming against President Snow and his authoritarian regime all alone, securing himself high-ranking positions in the government to not arouse suspicion.

Even though Plutarch isn’t seen much in The Hunger Games’ first movie, he gets a way bigger role in both Catching Fire and Mockingjay’s two chapters, confessing to Katniss about his plans to overthrow Snow and eventually becoming one of her most loyal allies ahead of the Second Rebellion.

After the war ended, Plutarch was appointed Secretary of Communications in the Capitol.

In the franchise’s next prequel, Plutarch Heavensbee will be portrayed by Breaking Bad and Fargo’s actor Jesse Plemons who has been fan-cast by The Hunger Games’ viewers and readers weeks before the official announcement came along.

“Jesse is one of the most talented actors of his generation, with a proven record of picking his roles selectively. We are honored that he has chosen to bring his own take to one of the most fascinating figures in Panem, and feel that his previous collaboration with Philip Seymour Hoffman makes it all the more special. His Plutarch will be both a tribute to the character fans have already come to know and a portrayal he makes his own. We can’t wait for audiences to see it”, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s co-president Erin Westerman said in a statement shared by Variety.

When Is ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ Being Released?

The movie hits theatres on November 20, 2026.
