Why Ellie Doesn’t Talk to Joel Anymore in The Last of Us Season 2, Explained

Bella Ramsay’s character is holding a serious grudge against Joel by the time The Last of Us’ season 2 picks the story up, but the answer to the mystery was there all along — here’s where you could have missed it.
We’re getting closer to some more revelations saved for The Last of Us’ season 2 episode 2 which will probably highlight something else essential about Ellie and Joel’s failed relationship.
The pair has bonded throughout the show’s first season (even though it didn’t come without its own troubles), but now is seen barely talking to each other, with Joel admitting that Ellie treats him like a betrayer.
The plot twist might have become something confusing for those who never got familiar with the original video game, but there’s still a hint The Last of Us’ creators carefully put into the very beginning of the first episode.
Why Are Ellie and Joel Feuding?
It’s pretty obvious that Joel never wanted his relationship with Ellie to come to this point, but well, this is what he caused with his own hands.
In one of the first season’s last episodes, the characters are seen arriving in Salt Lake City where Ellie has agreed to give her genetic material for the future vaccine against the further spread of the infection.
However, the plan is soon thwarted when Joel finds out that the procedure will inevitably lead to Ellie’s death — without much thinking, he brutally kills everyone in the hospital and takes unconscious Ellie away, later telling her that the procedure just didn’t work out with her.
Ellie makes Joel swear that he was telling the truth, and he does so until somehow Ellie figures out that he has been lying to her all this time.
Naturally, the scene taken from the show’s season 1 shows up again in the second instalment’s premiere episode, hinting at the real reason why the characters aren’t in touch anymore.
Will The Last of Us Season 2 Reveal More About Ellie’s Discovery?
It’s not clear yet whether the show’s sophomore season will delve into the matter, though it definitely should.
In the original video game, there’s only a flashback of Ellie returning to Salt Lake City to find out that the only person who could have made a vaccine has been killed, which eventually leads her to pressing Joel, demanding that he tell her the truth.
Unwillingly he does so, and this is where their relationship suffers a downfall with no chance to get back to normal.
Considering that it’s been 5 years between the events of The Last of Us’ two seasons, it’s fair to say we may expect a flashback scene as well, since the option of these two talking to each other ever again doesn’t really sound very realistic.
