One of the last original firefighters at 51 is hanging up the helmet — and by every available signal, nobody asked him if he wanted to.

Chicago Fire returns Wednesday, October 7 at 9 p.m. on NBC, and the season opens with a countdown nobody wanted: Joe Miñoso's Joe Cruz — in the firehouse since the 2012 pilot, a series regular since season 2 — will appear in a handful of early episodes before exiting the show for good. He survives the season 14 finale explosion, which is the good news. The bad news is what survival buys him: a farewell arc.

As for the "why," the most honest answer is that the official explanation doesn't exist — and the unofficial one is sitting in plain sight. Earlier this year, Miñoso told TV Insider he had "no interest in leaving" and would happily ride Cruz through season 20. Months later, his exit was announced anyway. You don't need a crime board to connect that: this reads as a business decision from above, on a show that has been trimming its payroll for two straight seasons — Daniel Kyri's Ritter was written out just last year, and Dermot Mulroney's Chief Pascal gets dispatched in this season's premiere. Meanwhile, Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo signed fresh deals, which tells you where the protected tier begins.

What 14 seasons adds up to

  • Longevity: Cruz appeared in nearly every episode since the pilot, one of only four original cast members left standing through season 14.
  • The sendoff: co-star Brandon Larracuente, who got an early look at the scripts, promises the writers built Cruz "a phenomenal" goodbye.
  • The turnover around him: season 15 arrives with a new showrunner, Victor Teran, and a new candidate — BMF's Da'Vinchi as Marcus Burke — walking into the space Cruz leaves behind.

Larracuente didn't bother pretending the loss is routine, telling TV Insider:

"To not have that presence on set every day, there's going to be a definite void."

He also credited Miñoso with opening doors for Latino actors across the One Chicago franchise — and floated the hope that he returns behind the camera, since Miñoso has been building a directing and filmmaking career on the side.

The Night Agent season 4 release date: the final season has wrapped and Basso promises an 'explosive' ending

The one demand fans agree on

When Miñoso confirmed the news on social media, the replies turned into a vigil — Chicago P.D.'s Marina Squerciati cheered his filmmaking future ("The world is ready!!!") — but radio host and friend Yaya Martinez spoke for every viewer who remembers what this show did to Otis:

"It better be a peaceful departure we don't need Joe Cruz going out traumatically"

Whether the writers honor that is the question hanging over the premiere. Cruz's final shift starts October 7; NBC hasn't said which episode is his last.
