Why There Won’t Be a Season 3 of 1923, Explained

Taylor Sheridan’s second sequel series to Yellowstone was never meant to receive another season. We’re here to explain the reason.
Even though its ending was far from what many fans expected to see, Taylor Sheridan ’s 1923 has been quite a big deal for Paramount+, breaking viewership records with its second season, but not wrapping the story up just yet.
The show is already a huge part of Sheridan’s Western franchise started by Yellowstone in 2018 and will now pass on the torch to one more prequel series.
The latter, in its turn, is about to take a closer look at the Dutton family’s next generation — and that’s the reason why you’ll never see 1923 coming back to the screens.
What to Wait From Taylor Sheridan After 1923
After the show’s shocking finale, it’s pretty clear that the director’s attention now will be fully focused on the next generation of the Duttons, with Alexandra and Spencer’s son John becoming the central figure.
However, this is not something for 1923 to explore, which is why another prequel series titled 1944 is currently in the works, potentially delving into the life of John Dutton II amidst the ongoing World War II.
As for 1923, those who expected the show to run for at least three seasons had the answer to their question all the way back in 2023, with Taylor Sheridan revealing that he planned only two parts of the prequel.
“It's really the second half of the season. This one is different than 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I'm the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got. Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight episode block and a second eight episode block to wrap this up. I can't wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice”, the director revealed in an interview with Deadline back then.
What Fans Say About 1923 Finale
Things started out just fine for the series’ fans who rushed to Paramount+, making 1923 the most-watched show in the streamer’s history. But it all soon went down the drain when, according to many fans, “one of the most stupid series finales” was dropped.
“Season 2 is a masterclass in contrivance, convenience, and unrealism, not to mention certain characters making some insanely stupid decisions”, ForTheLoveOfOedon commented, comparing 1923 to Sheridan’s previous prequel 1883 and calling the latter “divine, one of the great Western TV shows ever”.
“I suspected it was going to go that way. Sheridan has trouble finishing/continuing stories. Look at the mess of Lioness, Tulsa King, and Yellowstone. I didn’t even bother watching this season”, silentwind262 chimed in.
When Will 1944 Come Out?
For now, it doesn’t seem like the series had its production started, which is a reason to believe the episodes aren’t coming to streaming until at least 2026 or later.
Paramount+ is yet to announce the premiere date.
