Will Guillermo del Toro Return for ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ Season 2? Everything We Know So Far
Netflix’s anthology series has been on halt since 2022, though Guillermo del Toro is now poised to continue with a second season — but there’s a catch.
There might be only few directors capable of creating dark fantasy worlds as sophisticatedly as Guillermo del Toro, which will likely be proved by the director’s upcoming and very much anticipated Gothic horror.
It took del Toro years to finally finish Frankenstein, his own vision of Mary Shelley’s iconic horror novel, though the director’s fans might have something else on their list waiting for an update from del Toro.
In most cases, this will concern Netflix’s fantasy anthology series Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, the first season of which was released three years ago and since then hasn’t been joined by a second and very much desired instalment.
Del Toro, however, doesn’t mind going back to one of his hit projects, but this time he doesn’t wish to be that involved in the production.
Guillermo del Toro Wants to Direct Only 2 Episodes for ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ Season 2

Surprisingly enough, such a decision doesn’t really have to do with the director’s personal tight schedule full of other projects, but rather del Toro’s desire to give the spotlight to lesser-known directors that deserve to be seen.
In an interview with IndieWire in 2022, he revealed he’d love to let other young filmmakers he knows personally direct at least one story for Cabinet of Curiosities’ season 2.
“With an anthology, you can support eight filmmakers in one fell swoop. We created an arena where we basically said, look, you have full control. Even if you disagree with me, you can disagree with me, but I'm going to give you every support so you can create with one hour in an ideal conditions”, del Toro said.
Apart from that, the director also highlighted that he already has a list of potential directors for the show’s next instalment, with himself contributing with two episodes only.
“I would like to write the opening and closing stories for the next season and leave the middle to others. What I do is I curate stories that have not been done that could land well with the director”, he added.
Netflix Hasn’t Yet Renewed ‘Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities’ for Season 2

Even though the series received raving reviews from both critics and viewers upon its release in 2022, the streaming service is still unusually hesitant about giving it an official second season.
Apart from the fact that no one really knows how exactly Netflix decides to renew or cancel a show, fans also suggested the streamer’s bosses fear that Guillermo del Toro won’t return to the project that soon due to his busy schedule.
Whatever the reason, the concerns about the director’s willingness to make a second season actually make sense: del Toro has just released his long-suffering Frankenstein and has already started woking on several more projects, including a possible Phantom of the Opera remake.
