It’s not a secret that, just like any dystopian story, The Handmaid’s Tale is about both the good and the bad, but sometimes they get mixed up, leaving fans with nothing but confusion over how they feel about this or that character.

The Handmaid’s Tale Creator Breaks Down on Serena’s Expanded Family Arc in Season 6

It's fair to say that Yvonne Strahovski's Serena is a polarizing character who has long tried to strike a balance between both sides of society in Gilead.

However, the character's storyline soon received several updates, revealing what influenced some of her strangest decisions and how she feels about causing trouble, including the role her father plays in all of this.

“We’ve learned about her, but this is really interesting, because it’s not about a relationship she chose, like with Fred … Here, you’re like, how did you become the woman you are? I think that’s the really interesting question now, because you’ve plumbed the depths of Serena to know what’s there, you know the woman that’s there. So when you get to season six, you’re asking the question of, what was her father like? And I don’t think you are at the beginning, because I think she has a million relationships in her life, but that one gets much more interesting when you realize how much steel she has”, The Handmaid’s Tale’s creator Bruce Miller revealed in a recent interview with The Wrap.

Before the show’s season 6 changes something, the fans mostly remain on only one side.

“I loathe Serena!! It was her ideas that shaped Gilead. If it wasn't for her, I don't think Gilead would have been the way it was. She's a rapist and a monster and she should meet her end exactly like her husband. She's the actual gender traitor here, Moira was right in that regard”, Redditor Gullible-Advisor6010 commented sometime before the new instalment arrived on Hulu.

“I don't think she's changed at all. She still thinks she's "above" other women like June. The only reason she didn't kill June after escaping from the Wheelers was because she was in labour and needed June's help. Serena will always see June as her inferior, her servant for what she needs. Maybe the sixth season will prove me wrong, but I don't see her core character changing”, Anna_Rapunzel added to Serena’s haters club.

“We see glimpses of humanity and there are aspects of Serena that one might admire, but she always circles back to selfishness and treating humans like pawns”, Redditor derp_runner put in.

“A key part of redemption is genuine remorse, which Serena lacks. If the showrunners try to pull a "She's a goodguy now!" and skip that step then it'll just rightfully upset a lot of viewers. Even if they have Serena express genuine remorse, and fully renounce Gilead, a lot of viewers will still think too little, too late”, New-Number-7810 chimed in, talking about Serena’s allegedly developed redemption arc in the new season.

Season 6’s next episode 5 will drop on Hulu on April 22. The following episodes will also arrive on the platform every Tuesday until May 27.
