Will There Be a New ‘Harry Potter’ Movie? Here’s What Fans Need to Know

Harry Potter’s movie franchise could have gotten one more instalment, but fans are relieved we’re getting HBO’s TV series instead — here’s why.
Even though it’s not yet clear what HBO’s Harry Potter reboot series will eventually turn into, things could have gone way worse for the franchise had another installment been adapted.
Currently in production, the upcoming show’s first season isn’t being released until 2027, coming to the screens more than 15 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 premiered in theatres.
However, things didn’t quiet down in the meantime as three Fantastic Beasts movies came in between, all the while bringing in a rumour that another part of the franchise by JK Rowling is being adapted into a movie.
Though this never came to be, Harry Potter’s fans are surprisingly happy that the most controversial installment remained in the shadows.
‘Harry Potter’ Fans Never Wanted “The Cursed Child” to Be Adapted on Screen
Despite Rowling’s sequel play still making it to Broadway, there was never a plan to adapt the story into yet another movie, even considering the film franchise’s immense success in the past.
Apart from the fact that many fans criticised “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” calling it some sort of a fan fiction instead of a solid continuation, the play was also quickly forgotten due to numerous controversies surrounding JK Rowling’s name and some of the book’s storylines.
“Anyone who wants Cursed Child to be made into a movie clearly did not read the script”, Redditor commented in a thread.
“Making a Cursed Child movie would be the worst idea ever. I don't know what JKR was thinking when she gave the OK to a play with that plot being written. Surely she didn't need the money”, farseer4 agreed.
In the Meantime, What’s Going On With ‘Fantastic Beasts’?
Planned as a major addition to the Wizarding World franchise, the Fantastic Beasts movie series was initially planned as a five-instalment separate franchise that would serve as a prequel to the Harry Potter series.
However, things reached a dead end in 2022 when the third movie titled Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was released.
Though the remaining two instalments aren’t a priority, they are still in plans for Warner Bros. Discovery – though some fans think there’s no way for the prequel franchise to go back to normal after it tied itself way too much to the original movie series.
“Fantastic Beasts series only started to falter when they tried to tie it too closely with the Harry Potter storyline (Dumbledore /Grindelwald). It was much better when it was its own thing and just another story set in the same world”, Gtype wrote in the same thread.
