Yellowstone’s Dutton Family Tree, Explained
Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise may have some fans completely lost in the complex relationships of the Duttons. We're here to break down who's who in the flagship series and its prequels.
It seems like nothing is able to stop Taylor Sheridan from delving even more into the story of his Yellowstone ’s main family, with the director now preparing two more spinoff shows after 1883 and 1923.
Those two, so far titled 1944 and 6666, will make a total of 5 series exploring every corner of the Dutton family’s history, and for some it might be even more challenging to figure out the relations between the Duttons than remember every single character in Game of Thrones.
Anyways, it’s not that tricky once you get used to the franchise’s characters a little bit more — memorizing the parents and their kids might be enough.
How 1883 Connects to 1923

Even though Yellowstone was the show that paved the way for Sheridan’s further exploration of the family’s background, 1883 is where everything starts.
The first prequel series centres on James and Margaret Dutton, a couple who flees Texas and eventually settles down in Montana while looking for a better life; they have three children — Elsa Dutton, John Dutton Sr. (also known as John Dutton I) and Spencer Dutton.
In 1923, however, the whole attention drifts away towards another part of the family, now taking a closer look at Jacob Dutton, James’ brother, and his wife Cara Dutton.
This couple also shares three kids, with those being one more John Dutton Sr., Jack Dutton and Spencer Dutton.
How 1923 Connects to Yellowstone
1923’s finale paves the way for Sheridan to fix Yellowstone’s major plot hole, proving that, before dying, Spencer’s wife Alexandra names her newborn son John, which seemingly confirms this is no other than John Dutton II.
The latter, whose story will most likely be told in Sheridan’s upcoming prequel titled 1944, is the father of John Dutton III, the patriarch of the Dutton Ranch in Yellowstone where the character is portrayed by Kevin Costner.
