The writer’s collection boasts of quite many TV series based on his books, but some others had Stephen King on board for a different purpose.

There’s no such thing as a precise list of movies and shows when it comes to all kinds of adaptations based on Stephen King’s novels and short stories.

While many still came to be and turned out either a massive hit or a total disaster, tens of other adaptations remain in works or have been shelved by their creators, despite getting close to being pushed into production.

Considering how many movies with a Stephen King label on them are released every year, it’s safe to say the film format is adapted way more frequently than the series form.

However, it still might take you a while to watch all of the shows that are connected to the writer’s name.

How Many Stephen King TV Shows Are There?

So far, Stephen King’s collection of TV series counts 40 titles, including Mike Flanagan’s upcoming project Carrie based on King’s debut novel of the same name, Paul Greengrass’ Fairy Tale and, again, Mike Flanagan’s The Dark Tower.

Despite coming on board for most of his adaptations, the writer was involved in the production of only nine TV series based on his books, joining some only as a consultant and not a writer.

This was reminded to King’s fans in a pretty depressing way several months ago when the writer revealed he wouldn’t be writing the script for Flanagan’s highly anticipated adaptation of “The Dark Tower”.

“Contrary to the Internet (which usually is never wrong), I am NOT writing for Mike Flanagan's DARK TOWER”, King wrote on his BlueSky account back in February.

Instead of ‘Dark Tower’, Stephen King Wrote Several TV Shows Not Based on His Books

The king of horror might not be there for many of his own adaptations, but it’s probably because he’s booked and busy writing a completely different story that has nothing to do with his own plots.

King’s peak scriptwriting activity marked the 1990s and 2000s when he penned scripts for many other shows like 1991’s Golden Years, 2002’s Rose Red and 2004’s Kingdom Hospital based on Lars von Trier’s 1994 supernatural horror miniseries The Kingdom.
